indeed, something very special ... looks not very spectacular ... but then I find myself keeping wondering, exploring, thinking.
Realy very interesting!

Andre du Plessis  Hi Piet. I think that my meting and chat with Matthieu was so interesting, and I fely positive about the images that I took - and became lucky with this one. Sometimes is is so dissapointing not to be able to share both the conversation, and the image. What transpred afterwards, and what I learned from him by email, made me ever happier to have had this published. I think that one has to see this image in context with his story a few lines down. Many thanks, Andre

I have studied this pretty intensely for a very long time and I'm still not sure whether or not I like it or not, but it has a certain something, a certain essence. So although it is not my favourite, just want to say congrats for what I'm sure is a brilliant photo. A photo with technical quality and essence is a gem.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Alex. Shoot away, and tell me what is in your mind. It will help me as well. This is what portraiture is all about - a dedate. Andre

This is really a great portrait, Andre!

Congrats!
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Lady of the Little People. What did they get up to over the weekend? My regards, Andre

I continue to be blown away by your photography, Andre. Do you do workshops of any kind?
Andre du Plessis  Dear Kim. Thanks plenty for your lovely and supportive comment. I am not so much interested in the technical stuff, and never have a real plan or protocol that I follow, and that applies to the subject material (which is opportunistic), nor the post editing (which can take me hours, and are often subject to a re-working). The banding in the shadows that I consulted you about earlier in the year seems to be less of a problem nowadays - have no clue as to why, and generally feel that my editing has improved, but once again, probably only because I am doing so much of it thesedays. In my dreams I shall be unable to put a workshop together, but what I can offer is for you to come down this way, and we spend some time together to exchange ideas, create impromptu images of people that we shall seek out in the street, share them and delliberate them amongst ourselves, help one another in the process, and maybe make time to celebrate the day with a bottle of red. Your call - I shall really like that. Regards, Andre
Kim Ayres  Now that is an idea I shall give some serious consideration to!

Kim :)
Andre du Plessis  That will be very nice for me as well. Where about do you live?
Kim Ayres  I live in SW Scotland. Go to Carlisle, pop over the border, turn left and I'm about 50 miles along. It's a beautiful part of the country, although very rural and less populated. If you visit my website - kimayres.co.uk - contact details are at the base of each page :)

Magnifique portrait Andre. I like the detail.
Andre du Plessis  Hey captain! Finally I have gotten the go-ahead from Peter the local hairdresser. Only problem is that his shop is totally dark - blacked-out windows, and IR is not really my thing. However, we will have to work around that one, for he has as many, if not more pictures on the wall than Colmar's laughing barber. Many thanks for the feed-back. Andre
Ricky Siegers  :) so I will waiting paitently...till you get the picture Andre. :)

Hi Andre, in 1st place, very good morning from Portugal :)
And in 2nd place, you have here another masterpiece of study of character, with fabulous light ! You know i love it ! :)
Andre du Plessis  Dear Rui. Many thanks for the best wishes from Porto on a Saturday morning. Now it is Sunday evening, no photography done over the weekend as intended, and the day job starts again when the sun is up. Next stop Friday evening. However, in celebration, I shall cook up a Portugese dish between then and now, and let you know if it worked. So take care you, and happy snapping up there. Andre
Rui Pires  Not from Porto, André. Is from Aveiro ... 60Km at south :) . No photography also for me this weekend due terrible weather :( I hope you have sucess with Portuguese dish :)

Amazing you were allowed to operate with a tripod unfettered! unusual but great news. This is a cracking shot Andre it is so intense yet so relaxed. I love the 24-105mm perfect at f4 & at 1/15sec still could have hand held. Well done.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Gerry. Yes, this lens is good, although I wish it was just a bit faster. I won't really miss the IS - as I usually see that I keep still, and image stabilisation does nothing to prevent movement artifacts of the subject, and that it usually where the problem lies in low-light for me.
The tripod - I have a been using it with a Manfrotto 222 joystick head, and that was my best buy for '09! It don't set the tripod up, but in cases like this leave it closed, and with the flexibility that this ball head gives me, usually simply support it against me for some stability, or alternatively as a monopod. I shall advise anyone to look at that 222 head - so user friendly. Much appreciates comment, Andre

Excellent Andre, vraiment excellent.
That seems sooooo simple... (but well, it is not)
Andre du Plessis  Merci Jacques. I only wish that I can be lucky like this more often. Sometimes I think that one simply has to be quite bold and swallow that 'rejection' fear, and not pre-visualise that sulking away with your tail between your legs:) On this occasion I was so annoyed that I forgot to feel embarrassed. I have also noticed that I get better cooperation when I carry my tripod when doing this stuff. I firmly believe that this accessory has something to do with giving one more credibility, and thus facilitates access. Strange, but true:)

what an eye contact...powerful!
Andre du Plessis  Hello Fabio. His eyes makes it easier - they are like magnets:) Andre
Balazs Pataki 2 years ago
I can't believe it - YOUR 24-105 is actually able to focus accurately. Those veins in the eye are amazing - one must love the details. But all this aside, there's is something kind and mellow in his look that you captured brilliantly.
Andre du Plessis  I can assure you that my lens is as sharp as your mind is, Balazs. It appears that the problem lies in how it talks to your 5D body. About Matthieu - yes, your perception seems to be echoed by myself. The suggestion of intensity in his eyes and his relaxed demeaner are at odds - a kind of 'juxtaposition' in terms of portraiture, I guess. That adds to my own level of enjoyment of this image. Thanks, and take care, Andre

Well, :) I locked into this eyes for some time. Finally I moved on to look at this lips, the beard, and you have grabbed the essence of this man. The earring the final sale for me. If I were 30 years younger I would buy a ticket to London! Yes, you have made him that appealing. :) Wonderful picture. My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  I shall have to tell him about this comment of yours - sure that he will really enjoy the news:) Many thanks for the lovely comment, and also for the advice earlier this week. Andre

A striking portrait! From his expressive eyes to the wisp of smoke passing through his lips...stunning!
Andre du Plessis  Yes, I do believe that that wisp of smoke makes a difference. This was 'after' our photo bit. I was already done when he rolled and lit up a smoke, and for me that became the moment. Many thanks, Andre

A very intense portrait, Andre, excellent work, like it a lot!
Andre du Plessis  Many thanks Codrin. The light was fading fast, and I think that I managed about three different angles from my side of the table, however, this one pleased both of us the most. And somehow this to me is the 'one' that I wish to remember this encounter and person by. Dark, deep, and intense, yet so gentle and relaxed.

Andre,

Very intense study - very nice.

Once again, hearty congratulations - this type of photography really is your forte!

Can't be better.

Go well.

Colmar
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Colmar. This was taken only minutes after Z-n. Still stupefied and very annoyed with the silly supervisor, I walked over to a coffee shop, noticed this gent with the most intense eyes sitting outside, and soon we were in conversation, and enjoying some impromptu portraiture. Matthieu also likes photography, so that was good. He is a writer of religious works, and at the same time a lay preacher.
