Determination
Taken in the home studio using the D2x and one strobe. The strobe was placed underneath a black backdrop with a hole in it to allow the light to pass through.

Very neat idea! Did you place the flame behind the icecube ? What kind of black backdrop did you use?
J. Eric Woods  This one was shot specifically for a challenge on the website, DPChallenge.com. I took an old backdrop, poked a hole in it and placed it over a glass table. I put a studio strobe underneath that and then the ice on the table. The fire comes from a small container of lighter fluid behind the ice. This took about 2 hours and about 300 shots to get what I liked. I shot it in a dark garage where the only significant light sources were the flame and the strobe that was well-controlled. I just set the exposure for the flame and the ice just turned out like you see. Thanks for looking!!

Perfectly executed! The light and detail inside the ice cube is amazing!
J. Eric Woods  Thanks for the kind words and for taking time to comment!
