Christian; there is no magic involved at all in creating this picture. Light up something that generates smoke. Position your camera and take a couple of thousand pictures. A couple of them are nice like this if you are lucky. It helps to have a really large studio with all ventilation turned off to minimize draft. I used two studio strobes for light in order to be able to use a rather small aperture.
