Every Picture Tells a Story
Lady Lisa. I saw her and had to photograph her so I got up my nerve and went and asked to take her photo. She was delighted, and talked to me for a long time about how she used to be a model. I showed her the picture and she really liked it !

Stunning!! I guess Beauty comes in all forms and shapes...in this case in all ages and wrinkles :)
Sandy Powers  Thank you, Faddoush! The more I look at her, the more I think she is beautiful in her own way too. My baby granddaughter told me when she first saw the photo "Don't invite her here, and 'can we go lock the door please' " :) But I do think if I could find her again and tell her the attention her photo has gotten since I took it, she would get a real kick out of it :) Thanks again, and have a great day!
Faddoush  I really do believe she is beautiful, Must have been one hell of a woman at her prime...but there is much more here, you have also captured her soul, her existence and that's why I think this photo has gotten so much attention.

How Utterly Splendid.
Sandy Powers  :) ! Thanks, MAK!
She´s a beauty. Very well captured, that cigarette ofcourse adds interest and characterto her. My experience is that if one sees a photogenic person and dares to ask, it´s almost always worth it, just like this one. The photo looks a bit oversharpened to me, but nevertheless, it´s beautiful. Good work!

Great shot, you can basically see how many stories this woman has witnessed.
Sandy Powers  Thank you, Michael! I so want to go find her again and tell her of the success of her photo :) She would get such a kick out of it. What a character... I can "feel" her presence. You really nailed this one.
Matti Sedholm 4 years ago
I've been thinking for a while now what to say about this photograph. I know I love it. there's no doubt about that. Like your title says, "Every Picture Tells a Story", this one really does. Funny thing is, I imagined her an old actor/model before I even read your accompanying text. There was a certain quality about her. And that storytelling is what gets my attention when wiewing photography.
All the more important to me; the photographer needs to be present in the photograph. That presence is very evident in this portrait. I can experience the person photographed as well as the photographer capturing the image. Everything in this existence is subjective in one way or an other,
Very powerful and at the same time subtle, this photograph. Fantastic!

(See, I thought for a long time, and still blabbered in the end. Unavoidable)

Sandy Powers  Matti, THANK YOU! I just spent time in your beautiful portfolio. A compliment from someone with such amazing story-telling photography as you means aLOT! I'm humbled!

Sandy, your image is so much more than just another beautiful portrait.
It makes me feel the strength of her will, the intensity of her personality, the complexity of her inner self, the nobleness of her attitude and so much more! It must have been a great encounter!
Sandy Powers  Marcello! What an encouraging awesome compliment. . .and from someone with such beautiful work! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! Yes, the encounter touched me in a way I will never forget. I loved it that she had not a trace of self-consciousness about her wrinkles and leathery skin. There was a sparkle in her eyes, a playfulness about life. In some ways, I would like to be her! :) Thank you again!

Brian Z 4 years ago
Agree about the yes but a fantastic portrait :)
Sandy Powers  Thanks, Brian. . .I wish I could post the original to add further amazement at how little sharpening I had to do to Lisa :)
Brian Z  hey, I wasnt agreeing with the sharpening point but the eyes themselves, is it smoke that is in front of th right eye? lisa's left eye ?

Sandy Powers  Yes, just a little wisp of it trickling up all around her face. When I asked her to pose, she said, "Suuuuuuuuuure" and she started to hide her cigarette. But I told her I thought it added character and interest, so she really hammed it up for me and carefully and slowly blew the smoke out so that it would be as "in your face" as she could get it :)
Øyvind Aak 4 years ago
hmm, have you used a bit too much radius on the sharpening here? Her eyes look very weird. Like their drawn on afterwords.
Except that it is excellent.
Sandy Powers  Actually. . .you would be AMAZED at how LITTLE sharpening and contrast I had to use. I did use some overall sharpening at the end, after I had re-sized for web. . . but believe it or not. . .that is the look of Lady Lisa.

Thank you :)

WOW ! What a woman ! ;) Maybe too much sharpness above the hand and around the mouth but the expression is perfect !
Sandy Powers  Thank you, Pascal. I'm telling everyone who comments on the sharpness of the wrinkles, that I seriously didn't have to use much at all. Lisa's lines and character were every bit that deep and pronounced. I sharpened it at the end after re-sizing it. . . .but she pretty much held her own in the stand-out wrinkle department :)
