natural scenery is amazing, how do I get these beautiful colors?
John Parminter  A lot of patience, dedication and willingness to be in locations at the right time that provide these conditions.

You tutorial about this photo is just great, when I look now at this image, then there is more to see, especially the foreground, the mid ground and the sky, I'm very happy too learn allot of your way too made photos, your use of filters
again just great

simply exceptional. You got incredible depth in this photography, perception is almost three dimensional. Everything ties up perfectly - lighting, tones, shadows, composition. Not a flaw.
Question about focus: you said 'one third into the scene'. One third in a 2D plane or one third in depth (Z) axis? What f-stop do you normally choose? The reason I'm asking is because your images are razor sharp front to back, no sign of blurriness whatsoever. Do you ever use focus stacking?

cheers
John Parminter  Hello Beno, no I never use focus stacking, just rely on good old Depth of Field. on this one I shot at 10mm and focused on the edge of the foreground and used f/11 to achieve front to back apparent sharpness.

JP
Beno Saradzic  thanks for replying. I'm always confused when it comes to landscape focusing...never now where and what to focus on, especially with scenes involving infinity.
On a separate not, I must say I'm impressed with the overall sharpness of the shot. It seems to be good lens.
John Parminter  Beno, if you shoot at short focal lengths then inherently you get a lot of DOF, combine this with an aperture of f/11 or more then you are always guaranteed infinate DoF with a close limit of less than a metre say. A good exercise is to google an online DOF calculator and put some typical numbers in for your camera and lens and you will get a very good feel for what you need to do to achieve your desired DOF in any particular situation.

MAGNIFICENT PHOTOGRAPHS.. UNBELIEVABLE WOULD YOU MIND TELLING ME THE SETTING YOU USED TO GET THIS GREAT SHOT..BEST REGARDS
LHAKPA
John Parminter  Thanks Lhapka, the settings were f/16, 1/4 sec, ISO200 but to be honest this image could have been achieved with many other settings as well. The settings didn't really create this image, it was more down to me getting into a position at a certain time and location where things came together favourably.

Cheers,

John Parminter  Thanks Morkel, it is one of my favourites as well. The D300 is a fab camera and I would recommend getting one even second hand it would give you great results I reckon.

The effort to climb onto the hill paid of....what a great view.
I hope to visit this region next year in may. Looking at your portfolio i get an overview of all the landmarks i certainly must visit. Hope to avoid the midges by going in springtime.
John Parminter  You should be OK for midges in May but I recommend a bottle of Avon's Skin-so-soft dry oil spry, it is the most effective insect reppellant that I know and you get to smell nice as well.

Gruss Franz
John Parminter  Hello Franz, it is Buachaille Etive Mor, Buachaille Etive Beag and the mountains of Glen Coe in Scotland.

Google Glen Coe for information and location.

Franz Schumacher  Danke John,

habe ich mir angesehen. Danke fuer Deinen Hinweis. Ist ja eine tolle Gegend! Muss ich aber unbedingt mal hin und einen Urlaub dort verbringen. Herrliche Landschaft. Schoen wie die Dolomiten.

This is a great shot john, Ive always wanted to climb high up and shoot towards mountain ranges. How long did it take to reach the summit? Love the winding of the river coupall and I can just about see that! cottage. :-) Great shot and great detail and well worth the climb.

Regards

Dominic
John Parminter  Cheers Dominic, I've visualised a shot from Stob Bheinn a' Chrulaiste for yonks now and had the chance recently, it is only a 30 minute climb from the road up the ridge until you come to a wee pool of water. If you have the 1:25000 OS map you'll clock where I mean.

A stunner John, congratulations.
Hoping to get to the highlands in Feb, how much of a hike off the road is this?

Phil.
John Parminter  Hey up Phil,
If you park your motor at the parking place on the bend where the wood is then it is only a 30 minute or so walk up the ridge, walk along the road a bit past the cottage then you can go through a few gates before you get onto the fell.
Definately recommend a sunrise shoot and in Feb you will be OK for light on this facing flank, leave it any later in the day and the Sun will be around the back of the face too quickly.

I was lucky to get away with this one but I reckon Feb, March, April with snow will be the optimum time for this shot as the Sun should be raking down the glen early in the morning.

Good luck,

JP

I've had this image in mind for a few years now and recently had the chance to try it out. Whilst I really like it and think it is a great vantage point for the glen, I still think I can make an improved version from this location, I just need to go back with a better covering of snow and the Sun rising more in the East to spread better light down the glen.

Cheers all,
JP
