Rock of Ages
What you actually see in the foreground is not sand but a muddy, peaty mixture which is the floor of what was an ancient forest that stretched from the West coast of Cumbria towards Ireland. Occasionally the sand gets washed away to reveal oak tree stumps and riverbed boulders washed down from the mountains.

I learnt this from a kind lady who thought I was from the British Archeological Society!

The colors are stunning, but what I like most is the repetition of the curves in the water , the clouds and the rocks, providing contrast to the sharp horizon. My eye keeps going to the buoy right on the power point of the upper right third. In my imagination, I've Photoshopped it away, but I keep putting it back because it heightens the sense of immense space. Nicely done.
John Parminter  Thanks for the detailed analysis Charles, appreciated.

Wow Gutes Licht! Ganz Klasse. Gradationsfilter sind das wie die Graufilter z. Beispiel? Habe selbst nur Graufilter. Aber man lernt ja bekanntlich nie aus. Gruss vom Franz.
John Parminter  Franz thanks, can't live without ND Graduated filters.

I can't help it - with this title I keep thinking of Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages".. still rolling, rock'n'rolling.. :D.. Really nice shot, John - beautiful, as always!

Good one JP. Is this part of series named after famous hymns?
John Parminter  Guess it coud be but really just a simple inclination towards the stranded boulder that has beed exposed. It isn't sea washed at all and considering that the forest hasn't been here for 10,000 years its remarkable that one day it becomes exposed. Other days when I go down it's just a completely flat sandy beach as in 'Earthbound' previously published.

John,

A striking image, with lovely light - so pleasing on my eye.

Next time you go there, the lady will think you're from the Royal Photographic Society!

Thanks for showing us.

John Parminter  Cheers Colmar, I go to Bootle beach often as it's only a ten minute ride away and I was actually born and brought up just a stone's throw away.

Again, no imagination needed in one of my images, just colours to sooth your eyes, it does mine at least!

very very nice!
Very nice John !
Do you use Soft or Hard grad filters ?
John Parminter  Lee 0.6 and/or a 0.9 Soft ND Graduated. Very good as they are colour neutral, bit expensive but they are hand-made by the good ladies at the factory. Mine are a bit scratched now but still essential I find for landscape work.

I don't use a 0.3 but really should own one to compliment the other two, mind I've got by so far without!!
