According to the biological theory for the origin of crude oil, it is a product of rotten organisms, which according to another theory would not have existed without the sun... so we can call Oil - "trapped sun particles".
That said, I see the picture as if the platform is sucking resources directly from the sun, despite what the normal perception tells that the smoke goes upwards from the platform.
There is no picture in 1x that has excited me so much as this one! Well done David!

I was directed here, and it was well worth the effort: the colours are magnificent and the illusion of the gases filling up the Sun is fascinating!

has a very different, ominous, feel now, after the oil rig collapse in the Gulf of Mexico... Terrific shot!
David Orias  These rigs have always been a little ominous to the locals since the 1969 oil spill we had in Santa Barbara. Thanks.
viskambin 2 years ago
oil is directly connected with the sun energy
actually the oil is sunlight pockets
today this oil platform would be present in very different "light"
photo is great, the light bending and the concept, good work
David Orias  In my area we had one of the first large oil spills in 1969, so these platforms have always been regarded as threats to our coast since then. Thank you.

Wow. This is stunning! Me and my buddy are going on a road trip to California in the summer, glad to know I have a lot to look forward too. Great capture.
David Orias  I hope you have a great trip. The sun won't be in this position until the fall and oil platforms are fortunately only located off just a few spots off the coast. I hope the morning fog that is prevalent on the coast in the morning won't wreak havoc with your photography.

is this a great zooming to get the sun this size or is it the real size? :)
David Orias  I used the longest telephoto combination I feel comfortable using which is a 600 mm lens with a 1.4X teleconverter. This was cropped from the full sized image about 30%.

Congratulations! Beautiful sun and colours, and curious moment. There is some kind of blurr below the platform, the rest is amazing.
David Orias  The blur may be a combination of things including depth of field, movement of the water, although the shutter speed wasn't that slow and water vapor just above the surface to the ocean. Thank you.

Did you need to put on one of those silver reflective UV/IR filters as used in eclipses? Or did live view come in handy? Not sure I'd put my eye to the viewfinder for a shot like this! ;-)
David Orias  The horizon was shrouded in just enough clouds that the exposure wasn't too bright. f/11 at 1/250 second is not a lot of light when you think about the exposure on a sunny day. That said, I did use the Live View for focussing. Thanks.

Nice one, Very good. I not sure about the sun centralization, but it very good.
David Orias  I know what you mean. I thought I might break that rule for this photo. Thanks Eitan. This is cropped a little so there is the ability for an editor to crop it so that the sun isn't so near the center.

If this is real it's an amazing capture! Very clever!
David Orias  Thanks Ralf. The sun, the burning gases and the platform were all in their places together at the same time for this photo. I was very lucky with respect to the burning gases as they don't always have that part going all the time on our platforms.

Pretty neat concept David, the platforms I visit in the N Sea don't look half as appealing as this....

JP
David Orias  Thanks. I actually shot this from a surfing spot. The day before I saw the sun was setting near the platform, so I returned the next day and got very lucky. They weren't burning the excess gases the day before.
