I love your work! And I also love decay. I recently painted fourteen paintings of the canals of Venice. That city got deep inside me in just a week's visit. I've also been painting pictures of the site of the Georgia Pacific paper mill here in Bellingham, WA where I live. Both sites appeal to me because they are in states of decay. I can feel how they once were and I love the mystery about what they will become. This photo is magnificent!
Sven Fennema  Ann, thank you so much for you kind words, I really appreciate them! I've never been to Venice but this is high on my list of places I want to go, must so wonderful - Hey you are a painter? Can I see some of your works somewhere? I'm very curious!
By the way thank you also very much for your order, your book will be shipped tomorrow morning, I can't tell exactly how long it takes with the shipping, but I hope the book will arrive, soon!
Best, Sven
Ann Chaikin  Hello Sven,
Thanks for your note. I am so delighted that you will be going to Venice. I was totally enthralled with that place. You can see my paintings on my fine art website: http://www.annchaikin.com/ There you will see fourteen paintings of Venice. The rest of the pictures are more local to where I live in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. My town is Bellingham, Washington. It's a small city with a large number of artists, musicians and book stores. It's a university town and that makes the difference. The paintings I did of Georgia Pacific might interest you. GP is a company that makes paper. They had a large plant in Bellingham. Five years ago they left and the city bought the property in exchange for cleaning it up. It is still waiting to be developed. I've done a number of paintings of it in its decayed state.

Thanks for sending off your book. I am excited about getting it. I really love your work and feel like we share an interest in the beauty of old things.
Best, Ann

This shot will remember Villa Branca that has been recently demolished.
I regret that I could not visit it .It is strange because I had been living for 15 years very close to it.

Ciao
Maurizio
Sven Fennema  Thank you maurizo!
This is really special for me as it's my own personal favorite shot - I heard of it and saw pictures of the demolishing act - with a tear in my eye, very sad :((((

Schade das der schöne Stuck und der Text Salve fehlt...
"the already existing version is stronger". ;)
Sven Fennema  Tja mir hat's eben auch so gut gefallen, jeder wie er mag .... was soll mir "the already existing version is stronger" sagen?
decay  Ich dachte die frage könntest Du Dir selbst beantworten.
Wer außer Dir würde so was Schreiben?

This image is immensely enjoyable, over a long look, as it has everything coming together - the light, the lines, the textures, the colours, the details, the softness, and most of all the composition. Hugely impressive, and inspirational.

One question I have - the ceiling. The top of the arch forms the top border, and I gather that was deliberate, or cropped so, and a natural choice of framing. But I can't help feeling some of the ceiling in the frame could have offset the foreground floor for a bit more overall balance. I have often faced this dilemma of framing the top of an interior shot, so I am intrigued as to how you went about the decision on this aspect.
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much Peter for you kind and huge feedback!
I agree absolutely, i would have loved to do that way, cause also in the way i had to to the shot i missed a little but wonderful detail on the top - Sadly the answer is, it was just not possible, as the room was too small, was already pressed on the wall :(

this is great.
the light is marvelous!
please tell if you can is it the available light only?
or did you use some lamp?
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much Monique!
No this is only available light, it was not easy cause it was very dark, the only light coming in was from above the stairs and a little from the door left.
But these red colors from the walls made such a wonderful warm light
