I've been to Washington D.C. for the first time in summer 2003. I strolled down the mall just like any tourist does and arrived at the Vietnam War Memorial. I was deeply impressed by this memorial because it is so different to the other memorials I saw during my time in the States. As I was spending some time there looking around, watching people searching for names and copying them with a pencil on a sheet of paper or laying down flowers, suddenly this picture came to my mind. It was my idea of picturing the mood and the spirit of this place. I just had a faint clue about photography and a very cheap and old camera and so I was not able to realize it this time (I didn't even try it).
On this day I decided to learn more about photography and how to transfer an idea into a photo.
In summer 2005 I was on business in Baltimore/MD and had one day off. I hopped onto a train, drove to Washington and tried to realize what I had carried out two years ago. The result is what you see here, I hope I succeeded.
And if you know the song "War" by Edwin Starr, performed by Springsteen - it will automatically become your inner soundtrack when you are visiting this memorial.
