En la vertiente norte de la isla de la Gomera, la zona más fría y húmeda de la isla se encuentra el Parque Nacional de Garajonay. Aquí al abrigo de las nieblas casi constantes se desarrolla una de las muestras de vegetación más exclusivas y variadas de toda Canarias. Fayas, brezos, acebiños, laureles, se entremezclan dando lugar en muchas zonas a autenticas salvas impenetrables. En primavera las praderas y claros estalla en mil colores cubriéndose con un extenso tapiz de geranios canarios. La alta variabilidad mesoclimática, junto con el aislamiento de las islas y el paso del tiempo, han dado lugar a una naturaleza excepcionalmente rica, diversa y singular (con un elevadísimo porcentaje de endemicidad) organizada en forma de ecosistemas únicos, que ha hecho que estas islas las consideren fuera de aquí como continentes en miniatura y dignas de visitas desde el comienzo de las grandes expediciones científicas hasta nuestros días.
