This is not ordinary shot of beggars. Here is point of interest on different emotional state of 2 persons in contrast with marching legs and steps of pedestrian in strong almost military rhythm. The photographer has the task among many scenes set aside the one that shows all the hardships of life of certain people in society.

A sad situation that we often see on the streets of our cities.

Ricky, I wish I knew the answer to the question you pose here. Your POV is excellent here as it allows us toe see this story in a more meaningful way. When I look at your photo I think to myself how close we are to being either the woman/child or the feet that walk by...Here in the US many are living in their cars, and millions are now what is called food insecure. I do not usually like photos of homeless people or beggars for so many reasons, so I generally would not comment at all.

However, when I read Gerry's comment I could see his points clearly, and understand why he wrote what he did. I have had those same feelings at times - especially in Greece when children were forced to beg. At the same time, it had the effect of making me see beyond this one woman and this one situation. I wish I could be there for the discussion! And I also wish that we could be free of our suffering...because looking at this picture I would say that everyone in this frame is in trouble of some kind.

Ricky Siegers  quote:
I would say that everyone in this frame is in trouble of some kind.

I like that Phyllis.
This is become a big discussion in almost any major city in Europe. I do understand what Gerry wrote below.
Because the action from this people is not pure hopeless, as I wrote below their look is to obvious you recognize them right away. This is more to organizing beggar. But my main point is the love to everyone (that is why I quote your sentence above)
Really hard to divine love sometimes :). The love of the people whose passing by and they just ignore her with their own reason. The love of the old beggar for themselves. They choose this work also for some reason for their love for their life or they love of their "LIFE STYLE".

Seriously I don't really like to take picture of a beggar, for me that is to easy. Sure you will get good story and emotion in it. But this one I did it after sometimes observation. I can not stop myself, because right away I have the same question where is the love. The love for every element on this picture, with their own reason with their own action.

I wish to have you too in the discussion with Gerry in Feb :) (I am going to visit Gerry and Andre in London )
I always like your comment and analyze on my work, and I am thank you for that Phyllis.

cheers,
Ricky

what a sad story telling photo,
;-(

People killing, people dying
Children hurtin', hear them crying
Can you practice what you preach
Or would you turn the other cheek
Father father father father
Send some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questioning
Where is the love
hardibudi  It just ain't the same all the ways of change
New days are strange
Is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why the pieces of love don't belong
..... Where is the love....
Ricky Siegers  indeed sad Barbara, thank you !

Hi Ricky you have chosen a very controversial title at least for my mind! Every picture does not always tell the story that a photographer may have us read into it. I imagine it takes an enormous amount of resilience to sit on cold paving in winter looking for handouts. What we see here is a woman doing this & from her demeanour we can only imagine that she is in need of handouts. But from stories & events here in London where we have the same problem of women begging with their children some who have been found to be operating as part of a network of criminals some being forced into this life of begging others there of their own volition. There are examples of women who are generally of Eastern European origin who have been filmed begging in the UK only later to be filmed living in spacious detached houses in Romania! Of course we should not tar everyone with the same brush.

So in my experience I may not have chosen to use such an emotive title because I just do not know the true plight of these two humans. I cannot influence how others see but I can offer that images like this never really tell the true story. The question is always do these people have to be in this place? Think about it. The European social system is pretty supportive of people on the fringes of society like these two appear to be. I find it very difficult to accept that even in this day an age anyone needs to beg for a living on our streets. The key word here is NEEDs! I for one would think twice about giving anyone money who has a handbag that vaguely resembles something that can be bought in a shop! And by actually giving them money we are promoting the idea that it pays to sit there!

Of course I am like everyone viewing this scene I can only see one truth two people are sitting on a pavement leaning against a wall in the winter with a procession of people passing by somewhere in Europe. I choose to leave an open mind about the question you raise as there are so many never to be proven answers!

As a street photographer of sorts I walk the streets of London & could have a 100 similar images but as I encounter these people so often I no longer point my camera their way for the very reasons I write above. This is not street photography it is documentary photography.

I would ask you Ricky where do you think the love is?
Ricky Siegers  Gerry the general idea of "where is the love" here is not only for the people whose passing by, but for the beggar itself. I have mixed feeling when I took this picture. Somehow I am agree with the criminal network that you mention above and yes they have obvious look. But my main point is where is the love surrounded, the love is so thin and sometimes it's really hard to divine it. The love of the people whose passing by and they just ignore her with their own reason. The love of the old beggar for themselves. They choose this work also for some reason for their love for their life or they love of their life style. I am totally aware with your explanation above :)
I hope I give you good answer :) !!! if not I will explaining to you personally in February :))

An emotional street capture, that I have come to fully appreciate with my second viewing of it. The man's folded hands are perfectly juxtaposed with the begging lady! Bravo!
