A Manta Ray at Manta Point
The Manta Ray is the biggest ray in the ocean. This small one was just over three meters across its wing span. I wanted to emphasize the shape of the manta using the surge in the background. The surge comes from the big waves originating in the southern Indian ocean and then break on the southern wall of Nusa Penida. A very intense spot!

It is very challenging photographing mantas at this site because of the enormous amount of plankton in the water. Many photographs from here simply look like they're taken in heavy rain with strong strobes. You only see the silhouette of the manta due to all the back scatter.

And some backscatter has been removed from this photo.

I am so jealous! I was there just two months ago but saw nothing do to poor visibility and a strong current.

Fantastic shot!
Johan Lind  It's a tricky place but I guess we got lucky! But from what I've heard they had a fabulous 2011 with Mola molas even in December. But it's a rough part of the ocean for being in the tropics.
