Apocalypse Now
It's rare to get thunderstorms in the Pacific NW, and even more rare to get them in the morning, so I was tingling when I arrived to find one in front of Mt. St. Helens. With lightning crashing all around, I called on all of my lightning-shooting experience (which was exactly none) and just fired the trigger as rapidly as possible. I got lucky in one frame. Blended a second frame for the flowers, as they were not still at the longer exposures I was shooting trying to capture the lightning.

Stunning shot Miles. The red flowers just draw the eye into your image, even when it is 1.5" size. This would look fantastic blown up at least 60". Your home is probably already adorned with your wonderful shots, maybe you better think about a Miles Morgan Gallery.

Stunning image - gorgeous!
This is an image of conflicts Miles. Your chose of subjects in the frame is conflicting as the colorful peaceful flowers conflict with both the deadly volcano and the angry thunderstorm. I also have an internal conflict about if I like this combination or not. Shooting the volcano and lightning in a frame with the dead trees a little further down the hill would have created a more uniform mood in the image. A safer bet. But then again your unusual combination of subjects is provocative and catches peoples attention. Ultimately that is why we choose to display the images we shoot and that is why I like it and will remember it as an unique landscape photo.

Stunning. I love the dof (well blended flowers!) and the absense of HDR feeling. Congratulations!

Beautiful! I love how you kept the contrast low. It's probably how it looked in the moment. So many people nowadays would HDR the heck out of that shot and it would look so un-natural. Cudos to you!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the comments. I had the pleasure of shooting up here with Ian, and his images from this spot are simply stunning, so no hurt feelings that his version is preferred. :) The collection of elements doesn't come together very often in this area, so I couldn't help but combine them, busy as it is. I may not have done it justice, but it sure was fun trying! :)
Wonderful!!

I've got to agree with Charlie Packard. Very many nice things in this picture, You could crop out of it several wonderful images, but all this put together makes too much of everything. It's a pity to say that, because all these things taken seperately are really beautiful - the meadow of flowers, the sky, the mountain with the mist at the bottom... they are great!
