And yet another great artistic way of conveying the power of the nautical elements and the human reluctance to obey.

What a ride, hopefully nobody gets seasick :) Cheers
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Ansel!
Well, some get seasick at our ship which is much bigger. I might have become seasick myself if I worked at that stand-by vessel.

Incredible capture...and so is the processing! Compliments! ...just looking at your picture and imagining the scene makes me feel uneasy :) not my cup of tea i guess!
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Sattwa!
No, not for everybody, the life out there. It is not only the weather, it's just as much being away from family, friends and what we are used to being a normal life. But been at much worse places.

Offshore Lars? I guess you are working on a rig or platform. Although I can see that you are pretty low to sealevel. Great dynamic seas and toning.

regards
Jan
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Jan!
I work at an FPSO (floating production and storage vessel), simply a production ship. That is the reason I'm pretty low myself. To get that low gives a few advantages for photos like this compared to a platform. And I can get pretty high too if I feel it would look better. Here I'm at deck 6, I can get to deck 12 before starting climbing up the mast.. Unfortunately, but for safety reasons, deck 5 is normally off-limits when the weather goes bad. Depending on our load but, I guess deck 6 is about 10meters above sea level
Jan Gravekamp  Thanks Lars, which FPSO one are you on? I am working with Heerema Marine Contractors, occasionaly going offshore on our SSCV's.
Lars Grepstad  I'm at Petrojarl Varg. Been there since early in the project. Took me from Batam, Indonesia to Singapore, then to the North Sea. Much more comfortable in the beginning..

great mood
sincerely, the post production is very 'strange'; but the action is simply impressive
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Jovelino!
Yes, it looks like it has been through some strange pp, but it has not. Contrast adjustment, a bit of desaturation, and as far as I remember adjusting up mainly at blue and green. I think it is the combination of grain/noise and the effect of the wind at the sea that makes it look a little strange.
Jovelino  thanks for your kind (and interesting) explanation

Certainly looks wide and windy out there, good work
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Richard!
You're right about the conditions, not at the worst when that shot was taken..

Beautiful and dramatic
However much noise have you cut much?
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Keller!
Can't recall I did any noise reduction in this one. Low light, high ISO, will inevitably give some noise. But in images like this, to me some noise can feel right.

Lars, these are incredible shots - I love all of them! There's something very primal in the ocean's fury that appeals to me deeply, and you've managed to capture this element masterfully! Congrats!
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for your nice comment Jim! I have the same feelings about the ocean. I've worked out there for a very long time. I also grew up out in the islands as far west as you can get in Norway. I moved away for some years, but came back. I tried living in one of our cities, in one of our fjords. Didn't work, It wasn't the real thing for me.
The ocean will never stop impressing me!

these shots are stunning Lars. You have such a terrific opportunity being able to shoot these.
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Nicolas!
Not many have better opportunities, but I still don't get many chances through the year. Not that the weather isn't bad enough. Last time out we had a good beating, but Norwegian winter gives short days. The real bad weather started in the evening, and in the morning it was nice again. The noise and shaking just took my sleep away, Then, if you get daylight you might be stuck with so bad visibility you just can't take photos.
This autumn and winter is probably the worst I've experienced in 20 years. But, when the worst weather has been out there, I've been home. And when it has been really bad at home (out in the islands), I've been at work.. Still chances, not even February yet!
