Very nice start here giles!
Great picture, Giles. Lovely grey tones and perfectly executed.
The more I look, the more I wonder how is the sound from the rushing water.
But most of all it reminds me of the sand worms of Dune. :-)
giles bertenshaw  Hans, the water thunders through these two spillways they are 23metres in diameter, and discharge out through the dam to maintain the level. as you can see from this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyberprop/6564082037/ they have little viewing bits and if you stand there you can feel the vibration in the stonework, they are mesmerising.

This picture is ready to suck you into it. Someone said "scary" and there's something in that.
When it comes to the details I think that you should have centered the funnel so that the margin from its edge to the edge of the picture was equal on both sides. Further I think that the top of the wall to the left should have been horizontal, as it is now it gives an impression of a slanted horizon.
giles bertenshaw  i tried straitening the dam wall but that put the tree lined horizon out, which was much more of an annoyance to the eye than the dam wall which leads you into the fog i felt?

Giles, very interesting picture. I had to look this up to see where and what it was....exactly. I must say your picture here is so much better than anything on the Internet...you have mystery, and atmosphere...and the movement in the water is wonderfully done. Congratulations...this has a nice unique feeling to it...I mean the whole picture. Congratulations. Phyllis

thanks for all the comments, i love this pic and have been waiting for the water to rise up for 4 months. 10 days before the photo was taken it was 3 metres down on this level, kept checking on the days i drove past and we had an awful night on rain so stopped at 7am on the way to work and it was pouring misty wet morning but the spillway was roaring and the fog looming up over the damn so i snapped away. set a high bar for myself now first submission first acceptance.......
