Makalu from the third step on Everest
Makalu is the 5th highest mountain on earth. Looking down on it means you are higher, in this case about the 3rd 'Step' on Everest.
Seeing the sunrise chasing away the nightly cold over the cloud sea is incredible and makes you feel more alive than ever, even when being in the center of the 'Death Zone'..

Harry Kikstra  Thanks John, it was worth it hauling the camera up :)
John Parminter  Harry, was this taken in the 2006 season on the North West ridge?
Harry Kikstra  Hi John, yes, 25th May 2006, from close to teh 4rd step, Tibet side (NW Ridge). were you there?
John Parminter  Hi Harry, no I wasn't there, I'm not a high altitude climber however I do walk and run over the mountains in the UK and have a passion for them.

I have read quite a few accounts of Everest expeditions in books and climbing literature, one recent one on the 2006 NW season and particularly the fatalities that happened that year. There was quite a bit of negative publicity I believe but I have an open mind and can understand different view points when it comes to climbing at such high altitudes, I get out of breath at the top of Ben Nevis...... :-)

Are you still climbing and enjoying the high life?

JP
Harry Kikstra  Ha, will likely have been Dark Summit.

I spent 3 hours in a phone-interview with the author and requested to see the material before publication. He then cut out 95% of what I had said and changed the other 5% and never sent me the docs as agreed.
There is a long list of inaccuracies which I sent him later, to which he also never replied. I guess the money is in the bank for him.

What else can you expect from a book that had its title and theme determined ("all those bad people on Everest") before a letter was written, before any interviews were done and before he had even seen the mountain. Anyway, unfortunately my own book about this is until now only available in Dutch; maybe if I have some time, I will translate it, as it is quite interesting.

To answer your question: I do still climb (just climbed 3 5000m peaks last month in Colombia/Venezuela), but am currently also busy cycling from alaska - Argentina, see http://WorldOnaBike.com for stories & of course, images :)

ps; Ben Nevis is great!

Thanks Nathan. We did not summit, but I had done so the previous year. The little white triangle on the lower right corner is Everest :)
The mountain in the far left back is Kanchenjunga, the 4th highest on earth.

I thought this was from a plane at first--I suppose Everest is practically the only other place it could be. Gorgeous shot. Did you make it to the summit?
