Summer No More
Photo series by Andre du Plessis
"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure in the landscape - the loneliness of it - the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it - the whole story doesn't show"

Andrew Wyeth, American painter, 1917 - 2009

I really love the idea of series, the individual photo's enforcing eachother to a series is a great documentary set-up, this one is a good example, great individual photo's all together giving depth to the end of summer feeling. wonderful work Andre.

Kind regards

Hi Andre, your series has an incredible atmosphere. The first thing that catches my attention is the tone (and mood). I like the decadent arrangement and also the void. I really like number 3, because I am a fan symmetry.
Again- excellent multi-output.

Andre, series is perfect. You presented on short way with few sort sentences the and of summer./ Everything is empty. No more people on the beach except as lonely group or one passing. Seasons on the beach are similar to the seasons in human life. We can feel the close of all activities and their track. Bravo.

Brilliant series Andre. You have captured the mood of the winter caoming in a fantastic "gloomy" way. Some of this shots remind me of the work of Sugimoto. Really great.

Andre, I am in the queue for the congratulations The series is excellent and it is one of the best work I have ever seen here. In my opinion, the quality of the 11 shots is not uniform but this can be the risk of the series. In any case I consider the #1 as a real masterpiece.

A fascinating series Andre, I have no favorite images, I love so much each and every piece of this story! My congratulations!

Andre...I just read al the comments below, and I am smiling...thinking I enjoyed reading the praise of your work in this series almost as much as looking at the pictures. The 'whole' idea is excellent as we can all identify with it. However, within each picture something stands out, that maybe 'some' can identify with in even a more personal way...For me that later one is number 10 with the chairs stacked and out of the way...and then they are defiant - they will not be put completely away...hope for a new year. Congratulations Andre a brilliant series. Phyllis

Eleven is not enough! Amazing series--straight into my favorites where I'll revisit these slightly haunting and captivating images time and time again.
Andre du Plessis  Well, a nicer comment I could not have asked for! Thank you Barbara, and best wishes.

Beautiful Andre, wonderful work - evocative and strong, lovely consistent processing, great series!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks TJ. I tried to keep the tones as similar as possible, however, that was not easy, as I do not have a regular workflow, and thus improvise every image as I see fit. However, I compared the thumbnails of the collection to see how the tones look at arms length, after which I then went back to redo or re-adjust individual images that did not fit the whole.

Looks great and very nice tones! Is this film? If it is digital I'd love to know how you processed it and where the grain is from.
Andre du Plessis  That smell of the fixer and that soapiness of the developer still makes me go quiet and sad. Where have those wonderful evenings gone! With mono I even could work with the door open to the garden when the moon was hiding......
These are digital, and because I wanted a coherent melancholic and rather somber mood, I decided to tweak my images after the initial corrections in Adobe RAW, and the bulk of the work-up in PS5. For the last two cosmetic adjustments (grain and tint), I used Nil Silver Effex. I was initially hesitant to use the grain aka noise facility, because they can look horrible, but with restraint you can sometimes get acceptable results.
Martin Gremm  I see. Thank you!

i am speechles Andre...
bit different photos that you usually show us...but also with this great power and impact that we admire always in your works
won-der- ful !
Andre du Plessis  Hi there Monique. I know that we will some time visit .... I just have that feeling. I think that our ways and minds are very similar, and it will be good to talk. These photos are not really that different for me. Most of my work over the last 30 years is along these lines: urban landscape, people in the street, landscape with industrial elements, and other work that B&W simple begs for. It is only recently that I started to concentrate on portraiture, in fact, only really since I went digital in 2008. So in may respect, this series was a re-visiting of something that used to do many years ago, and in that respect I thoroughly enjoyed the home-coming:)

I find the black & white really captures the mood and desolation of a holiday resort in winter. Fantastic processing.
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Graham. Yes, I think that mono was the way to go here, notwithstanding the fact that I am useless at colour:) I like urban decay, however, in some or other ordered fashion (composition), so the bleakness and emptiness really pulled me towards these pictures, yet allowed me to compose and plan. There was no pressure. The weather was gloomy as well, which only helped.

a wonderful harvest series Andre, well hitting the core of what autumn is to me too. Great work :-)
Andre du Plessis  Good to read that you can relate to this Christoph, and for sharing that with me. A most satisfying excursion this was for me, but it took me a day to get my head around what a series should contain. A super facility for this community, and I think once bitten .....:) Cheers!

Andre du Plessis  You mean to say that you never knew that! How many times do I have to tell you! No seriously Colmar .... thanks for the words, and the vote of confidence. This series function is something that is going to grow on me I know. Nice to work towards a collective set of pictures, both relaxing, and ultimately very satisfying.

just soooo excellent André... a wonderful series! 1,3,8 and 10 are splendid stand-alones also. big congrats!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks dorothee. As I mentioned below, it was such a relief to take pictures without having to really worry about the impact, compo, and that jazz of every single image. However, hearing your views on those 4 pictures are very re-assuring. Your comment really appreciated.
Hi André
your series is full of melancholia. Beautiful concept and realisation.
All the best
LandyMan
Andre du Plessis  Hi LandyMan ... thank you for your thoughts on this. On another note .... that one of mine is ++++ heavy on petrol. Crickey!, on today's prices those wheels are such a waste. .... but I like it's colour:) You should have told me to stick to diesel! Next round on you .... where-and-whenever.

Thomas Parsons 6 months ago
Aching. Shot on a single, somber day, walking near the beach?
Andre du Plessis  No Thomas, I went down to the promenade three times. After the 1st half-baked attempt, I mulled it over in my head, and then the purpose, and subsequent series gelled in my head. Very satisfying to attempt pictures that support a theme. The latitude that it gives is enjoyable, and the (self) pressure that accompanies a lone-standing image is not there.

A heavy light foretelling the end of all summers! Indescribably sad and beautiful, Andre!
Andre du Plessis  Happy to hear your view on this Dinu, and glad that this came across for you in that manner. I initially set out to do some street work, but an hour or so later I thought that a series on how I experiences the promenade will be more satisfying, and more true to the way I felt at that stage.

great series remember childhood :)
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Sarah. Good to read that this made you think about your own experiences as a child. Andre
wonderful, André! I can feel the mood and the solitude.
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Frederic. I am so happy to see this published! I so enjoyed creating this series.
I took these photographs 3 weekends ago when I visited Le Treport in the northern part of Normandy.
I last visited this promenade way back in July, when hundreds of people were enjoying the beach, doing fun things eating ice cream, and enjoying the sun.
However, the atmosphere was so different on my last visit. The promenade seemed deserted and bleak, yet for me it it held a sense of melancholic beauty, if that could be an acceptable description. I searched for a suitable description to this, but the quote from Andrew Wyeth says it all for me.
