sadness and silence
Photo series by Sven Fennema
This series shall tell about a tragic chapter in the history of italy, and actually of the rest of the world, too. It\'s a series about an abandoned psychiatric hospital which is closed and abandoned since decades now, but it could stand for many others with the same history. Those were terrible places, the patients were imprisoned, mostly for all their lifes, around 70% against their will. They were treated in terrible ways, without any human rights - Not only people who really had mental problems, but also hobos or prostitutes, everybody who did not fit into the society. The bad situation was reality for a very long time, till the big antipsychiatric reformation started in the late 60s and minister Tommasini stood for the first rights of the patients. Finally in the late 70s Franco Basaglia did a hard fight for the patient rights until finally these institutes were closed down and the people could live more free again, treated as humans, not as animals.

The series is arranged like a walk through the main complex, so the images are set in a fitting order as it should be. It\'s not easy to present even in a series of pictures as the place is so touching and monumental. Especially because beauty and sadness are so close together in there. You find the proud and impressive architecture as well as tragic remains and deep mood. The set consists of two visits there, all in all I walked there more than eleven hours in the silence.

Your work naturally lends itself to presentation as a series I think, and you've done a great job here. Beautiful, evocative, moving images. A couple of years ago I visited a similar place here in Australia - very different architecture but very much the same story in regard to the patients held sometimes against their will, very poor treatment, very moving and powerful emotions seemingly embedded in the walls. You have captured that essence so well. My congratulations.

I really like the series. Each image is well composed. For what it's worth I think if they were all in color the series would be a bit more cohesive. That being said I certainly have respect for your choices. Really well done.
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much Reathel!

There are many strong individual images here but they benefit so much more by being shown as a series which really brings the story to life.
As constructive critacism, I would only say that although I usually favour B&W work, these images work very well in colour and to be honest the few B&W images interupt the flow of the series a bit for me. Otherwise excellent!
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much Paul, also for the citique - I knew it would be difficult with the mixture of B/W and color as there was already a discussion before in forum, I understand the reason to keep this in line, but still I like such mixture depending on the case. For 1x I'll keep in line in the future, but for example the photobook I published with a friend each chapter is mixed of colour and monochrome pictures but I never had a feedback that it would be interupting

Wonderful images.
But, as a psychologist, I can tell Antipsychiatry didn't work, couldn't work by the way, and was clearly an utopy, who didn't end well for many patients. I don't know about Italy, but at least in France, the picture you draw of psychiatric services looks more like 18th or 19th century, and I think you're a little bit rude with psychiatrists.
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much! I don't want to offend psychiatrists, I'm far away from a position to do that, I think you know better and I would be glad if it's not that way, but also what I wrote is not a fiction while my research on the history about those asylums and not only befor the 20th century. I've read in many documents and really felt bad while reading -
But in the end I can't know

Dear Sven, fantastic images, light, colors, composition and once again light are simply fantastic. The mood they give is very strong and haunting, no words need to be added for that.

That being said however, I can not connect the photos together and can not grasp the whole idea of a series, one thing is we see different kind of compositions, from stairs, bathrooms, doors interiors and exteriors, I feel you could have done at least 3 different series of these wonderful 20 shots, that would have been stronger connected together than putting them all in the same pot. Just my opinion and look, and I am not saying this in a negative way Sven, I just feel when there is something I like so much that I need to tell my opinion.
Sven Fennema  Thank you very much Fadi and I also appreciate your opinion much! I thought a long time if I publish it in this way, in the end it felt just right for me. But I really understand what you mean. It is different to most other series as mostly they're connected more in a conceptional way, here it is more the logical and historical connection which was important to me, I could not have splitted this up in a way as it would destroy the for me more important connection. I think it can only work in this way. But next time I'll prepare a series I will decide for another kind of collection.
