Coming back to this one. Just really, really love it. It's one of the most peaceful pictures I've ever seen.
Nicolas Marino  ohhh Ursula, every time I look at it, it makes me drift away !! It was -12C but I wish I was there again. I will eventually, maybe not there, but somewhere else for sure. :) This is the video of that trip I just finally finished http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZXwjdtnEE8 it's 14 min. You can see that lake there :) Thanks again, I'm really glad you like it! :)

Nicolas, I came across to your this image that I missed when it first appeared on 1x gallery as I was traveling in China at that time. This image was just amazing and breathtaking. I wish someday I could travel to this area.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Yan ! Remote Tibet is a truly spectacular place. You can only get there on your own transport and with the bicycle you can easily go off-road to where nobody has been to. Truly amazing! :) ruguo ni lai dao chengdu, ni gaos wo a! ;)

Great shot! If you don't mind me asking, what ISO and shutter speed did you use? Keeping the clouds and stars sharp like this looks really good with the moonlight.
Nicolas Marino  Hi Jojo, Thanks for your comment. Of course I don't mind. ISO was 1600 and shutter speed 25". If you want more specific details I have written this tutorial http://1x.com/#!/tutorials/30792/life-after-death . It is not the same photo BUT that was the same night a couple of hundred meters from my tent here, and I used exactly the same techniques.
JoJo Shaiken  Thanks Nicolas, impressive results from the D700. I've always been a Canon shooter, but many of the high ISO/long exposure shots from Nikons are getting my attention.

Are you serious Nicolas? Do you really sleep there? The place looks dangerous, not in term of cold, but because of wild animals, insects, wild natives, and thieves!!
Nicolas Marino  heheh yes, really really, and in a lot worse places too. Wild animals are most of the time less dangerous than humans, and the only handful of humans around in this area were 3 tibetan nomads that were nicer than mother teresa :).
It is pure magic to sleep in places like these. Really nothing to worry about :)
Anisha Kaul  Glad to hear that. Be careful about your security, 1x needs you. :)
Also, more deadly than the wild animals are the *cannibals* (the humans who *eat* other humans)!

Nic..no actually I had not seen it. :) However I am reading your mind. Tonight Bill and I were looking at star trails moving...on Vimeo..and I said to him..I never asked Nick if he got that shot of the Milky way!! And here it is...thanks for telling me..seems these days I cannot keep up. Out of commission for a while..Well, I just cannot imagine sleeping in that cold...but the view is unbelievably beautiful...I hope you have this photo engraved in your heart and not just on your computer.:) It is wonderful. Congratulations on the photo and on surviving too. :) Phyl
Nicolas Marino  I'm glad that you didn't miss it now :) I have a few more milky way shots coming ! You'll see. It's engraved in my heart and every time I look at them, I sigh. Really really powerful feeling. :)

Wonderful place to sleep, I have never cycled that high, wonder how that feels, I hope the temperature was a bit milder on the day.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot Jan. It was a bit milder during day. When it was sunny, it was ok, but when cloudy it was unbearably cold. During day I had lots of passes, sometimes as high as 5000mts, so it made it even colder :)
Jan Gravekamp  Being a cyclist myself and having experienced some challenges as well, I am very curious to the story of your tour, do you have some kind of website?

Beautiful, Nic. I won't be traveling by bike in exotic locales anytime soon, but I do cyclo tour. Been a cyclist all my life. I'd like to see this in the print sales section. I'd like a copy for my wall. Bruce Gordon?

Nicolas Marino  Wow, i had no idea you were a cyclo Brian! That is so great :) To me, it was a one way road, the day I switched to travel by bike. I didn't know Bruce Gordon bikes, they look awesome! I have a more simple Merida MTB all equipped with Shimano XT and Tubus carriers, so it's been great. But one day I might invest on a custom made one like these, or the Koga Miata. But you know how it is, you grow to be in love with your own bicycle :). For sure I'll upload for prints and it's a honor that you are interested in It. I need to work a little bit more on a couple of details and as soon im ready I'll put it up. Thanks a lot Brian! :)

What an "open sky feeling" you've managed to convey here. I've read that you cycle(d) around China, so I assume this was your bicycle and tent. The glow from inside rounds it all out. Congratulations on a successfull journey, all the way to the front page!
Nicolas Marino  Exactly Colmar, that is my bicycle and my tent, on my most recent journey around remote Tibet. 1877km, 24 days, cycling up and down in the most extreme conditions at an average of 4600mts. Extremely hard but extremely rewarding.
Thanks a lot :)

Wonderful juxtaposition of elements: the garish green; the high tech, heavily worked cycle - and then the empty landscape, the simple but beautiful cloudscape, and the stars. The story not just of your journey, but an eloquent metaphor for all of us. Lovely work!
Nicolas Marino  That's a wonderful way to look at it Tim! Thanks a lot :)

So... looks pretty deserted there. I hope you did not get too cold!
Nicolas Marino  Hehehe -12C is like summer in Norway but I was freeeeezing! It took a looooot of will to be shooting there, but it was totally worth it! It's actually not deserted, if my other photos get published, you'll see a huuuuuge blue lake behind that small pond you see in this one. :)
