Life in one room
Photo series by Nicolas Marino
Life in remote Xinjiang. Uighur families live scattered around the vast and sparsely inhabited deserts and mountains of the region. Houses consist of one room where all the activities of daily life take place. Men are out in the wild most of the time, herding small herds of sheep and camels in unforgiving weather conditions, whereas women stay at home preparing the dough for the home-made bread, making sure the fireplace always has enough wood in it and taking care of the kids whose main entertainment in these isolated regions is playing with their several pets. At noon, the men and maybe some friends come back and the goat's milk tea and bread are always ready to be served to treat the guests. It'll be long until the come back by the end of the day.

Superb serie Nicolas. I'm really impressed by the quality of your indoor shots.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful encounters with us, for telling us each time a bit about their lives and for opening our occidental eyes with making us realized how tough life can be out there in many places in the world.
This is a very strong reportage serie. And thanks also for the replies you make to members' questions here below, highlighting us a bit more again about these people
Have a good day Nicolas
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Fab! I'm always happy to share the stories. I really like when people ask so I dedicate every response the proper time.

Wonderful progression through the images. All of the images, each strong on its own together tell a powerful story of who these people are. From a technical standpoint the use of light is really excellent. I think the exposures are really fine.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Reathel!

7 times the treat! Is this from your latest trip Nico?
Wonderful to see your photos collected together like this. Makes me even more desperate to see the book you've not yet made :)
Nicolas Marino  thanks a lot Kim! No, these are from early last year. I had submitted most of these alone since then but all got rejected. I m so glad they found their niche as a series. I love these people and the time I spent with them. These are Uighurs, not Tibetans. But you hang in there, there are A LOT more coming. but you know how long it takes to go through sorting 3565 photos!!! :) I think I now have enough for your idea about a future book of mine. I'm looking forward to it =)

Fantastic series Nic - but I have one question - blue eyes? Rather unusual no?? I really love the story your series took me throught - well done!!
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Kev. Yes, green/blue eyes are very very common in Uighur people. Bear in mind that Xinjiang used to be a country, not China. Uighurs have lived for centuries in this region and culture-wise they have nothing to do with Han Chinese. They are central Asian thus their exotic features, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Afghans, they all share these amazing Asian eyes but in green color. :)

Nic, I know how much you love this family so I feel so happy to see that you were able to publish a series on their life. Seeing inside and outside lets us know just how small their living space is. The colors are true to the area, and although their life is hard, you have shown them with joy. Congratulations it is a pleasure to see them all here like this. Phyllis
Nicolas Marino  after 7 weeks in screening I'm relieved it made it :) You know how much I've been attached to these shots since day 1 hehehe. Thank you very much Phyl, it's a shared success. :)
Phyllis Clarke  Seven weeks? :) I better submit something soon then before I die. :))

Quite spectacular how one can construct a variety of images all inside this little house - each telling it's own story within the whole. Wonderful warm colours that compliment what seems like a very warm and welcoming family. Well done with this series publication.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot dear Andre! I am really happy this one made it, especially because most of the photos in it had been submitted individually and all had been rejected. But as series they really became very strong.
George Doupas  Rejected? Really?? ...................

wonderful docu and with such beautiful light Nicolas, congrats! the portrait is absolutely stunning.. the last one comes a bit like a shock, I would not have imagined such "worldly" objects...
Nicolas Marino  Vielen Dank Dorothée! Yes, even in these remote regions, horses are being replaced by cheap chinese motorcycles very fast and simple solar panels are available to all of them to have basic electricity. I was surprised about this too. :)
dorothée rapp  :-) I am glad you show it all! :-) have a wonderful day...
Fine and well done documentary .

how long you stay in such travel ?

my congratulations Nicolas.

monique

Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot for your kind words Monique. Yes, these are the experiences I actually look for during my travels. THe trip when I took this was a fairly short one but very intense. I spent an afternoon with this family, i got to their remote house with my bicycle and they instantly opened their world to me and treated me like a honorable guest, like most of the time people in these regions do. :)

When 'Series' were first mentioned I thought of your travels and how suitable it would be for your work. You have proved the point perfectly and thank you for this excellent first example :)
For me the character of these people comes through with all the detail and activity that you have shown. Their faces show genuine warmth and friendliness. You must have enjoyed meeting them :)
Nicolas Marino  THanks for such kind words Charlie :) Yes, it was such a wonderful time I spent with them. Uighurs are so friendly and hospitable. In my experience, the more remote you get, the more hospitable and caring people are. :)
