Andre, she is fantastic! And an absolute natural in front of the camera. I know you hear it all the time, from me as well, but you have such a wonderful way of extracting the essence out of everyone you shoot... especially the kids. They must love doing this with you. I'm so bummed I was traveling and missed this one in Critique, but thrilled to see it all worked out the way it should have. A huge fave for me :)

Fabulous work Andre! I would love to rename this photo "Be Nobody's Darling". Such a wonderful expressive and decidedly untrusting expression she has as you take her picture. Good for her! She will go far in life, not putting up with much.
Here is the Alice Walker poem from which that phrase comes. Great capture Andre! Truly one of the best.

Another of your excellent portraits - your ability to engage the viewer is enviable.

I hope this lady will have a promising future - to look at her, you see a great strength of character and self worth.

I very recently read an article in National Geographic about the illegal weddings of young girls in India. One photo, of a young girl named Sunil showed this same kind of stance and gaze - she defied her parents; they relented and she will now be receiving an education rather than being married at a ridiculously young age.

A powerful portrait Andre.
Andre du Plessis  Luckily arranged weddings is not part of the local culture in Sub-Saharan Africa (to my knowledge) I shall keep tabs on this girl to see how her schooling etc is going, and will go. I usually try to maintain some form of contact with the families that I visit. Many thanks for your comment Anne.

The expression comes out much better with the crop IMO...even the first version wasn't already very good.
A good example that critique section make sense.

Best, Ben

Andre du Plessis  That is true Ben. I share your view on this. Thanks, Andre

...and how it evolved is really testament to the critique section here & your openness to critique. Whichever the result it had enough as an original shot to withstand the changes that have been made though I will not say this is my favourite cut as I think the original was fine as it was but it nonetheless as a crop or as a full frame image remains a strong photo & a wonderful addition to your growing body of work from this part of the world. You are one of this sites most accomplished practitioners Andre I cannot wait for more!
Andre du Plessis  Hi there Gerry. Yes, the support and advice that I received in Critique once again made me realise how valuable that section of 1x can be. For me this more closely cropped version holds as much appeal as the more wider original. It is now diffent, but maybe has gained in this journey. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Andre....yes..yes..she looks wonderful..I like the b/w very much and the traditional Andre speciality processing. I especially love her hair with all the details. You have done a great job really on this second version...:)))) Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Phyllis, but a bigger thank you for the help in critique. I was so content with the initial wider frame, but I have to admit - this more cropped version of Stacey seems more impressive for me, and I honestly feel that it is an improvement of the initial image that was not selected. The feedback from members in critique was so great, and wonderful to receive. That lower border, well I decided to straighten it out, crop a bit, and simply dodge the darker areas. I tried that adjustment that you suggested, but failed to get it working:). Regards, Andre

Fantastique ! what an outstanding portrait Andre !
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Ricky. Personally I enjoy this so much, and happy to have it up here and part of my PF. She had some blotchy marks on her face, so I struggled somewhat to get that sorted. In B&W those blemished made life hell.

A real pleasure to see another magical 'du Plessis' portrait published, love it Andre! Have a great Sunday!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Codrin. This was quite unexpected. I asked this family for permission to park my car outside their house, and then I saw this girl with the hair in the garden. So this house turned out to be my 1st visit. Realising that she had to be model she subsequently tied her hair neatly back, and it took a bit of persuasion from me to get this restored to the original look:)
limawhisky  your personality was the great success to talk to this girl and both of you made it! beautiful portrait Doc..
Vincent chung 9 months ago
You made it....congrats!
Andre du Plessis  Yes ... she did! I was so damn motivated to get this up here, thus decided to visit Critique with this after the initial rejection, and I have to say - seeing this through the eyes of others certainly helped me to realise where the business end of this image lies, and that is in her, and not so much the BG. Thanks Vincent

I hardly ever vote on pictures, but I did vote for this one. It was the best shot I saw on 1x that day.
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Martin. Your comment is really appreciated.
very excellent portrait ,and she was a great model, her expression have served the composition, her gaze made the composition, with very fine tones, just love it.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks you, and I share your sentiments about the potential of this little girl.

Great portrait, with a touch of "softness", which I think suits it wholeheartedly.
Andre du Plessis  I am glad that you mention that. She is young, and this 'knowing' look made me think of so many different titles, eventually settling on her name. There is a sense of provocation here that is out of keeping with her age. As far as a potential photographic model, I think that she will blow the opposition away.
Jacob Tuinenga 9 months ago
Wonderful portrait with a great facial expression.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Jacob. Yes, she is an undiscovered gem, living in a small village called Coldstream in the forest of Tsitsikamma. Here I photographed her outside their house in a shady part. I have some other poses of her, but I felt that this one was more special.
