A Family
One July day in the Barents Sea on the way to Franz-Josef Land on the icebreaker "Kapitan Dranitzyn", I encountered a mother polar bear with two cubs on an iceberg floating alone. The cubs hid behind their mom and looked curiously from behind. Franz Josef Land - is a sort of maternity home to polar bears. The breeding season occurs from March to June. The gestation period of 200-250 days. Polar bears are of low potential for reproduction: the female offspring for the first time brings in the age of 4-8 years, gives birth once every 2-3 years and brings 1-3 cubs, thus bringing to life for no more than 10-15 cubs during life period. Newborns helpless, like all bears, and have a mass about 750 grams. At 3 months, a mother bear with her cubs leaves the den and turns to a traveling lifestyle. Cubs remain with her until 1.5 years, during this time a mother bear feeds them with her milk. Very sorry to say but most likely the fate of these bears is not so encouraging. The floe on which the family was drifting has floated too far from the archipelago (approximately 750km), and apparently it was carried over to the south. The floe will gradually melt, so the family will have to swim. If the mother bear would be able to swim up to the dense cover (possibly, but not a fact), the cubs are just not strong enough. Due to recent intensive climate changes the ice of North Pole becomes less and less. Now there are many cases of people finding drowned polar bears, though even several years ago it would be nonsense to here such news.

http://www.livescience.com/15313-polar-bear-researcher-suspended.html

This is an article about a scientist who got fired and investigated because of a paper he wrote on polar bears, in which he wrote about polar bear drownings due to receding ice, and expressed an opinion that these deaths might get more numerous thanks to climate change.
The agency/company he worked for is responsible for oil/gas permits... they charged him with 'scientific misconduct' and claim that he has biased opinions.
Well, it still amazes me that an obviously profit-oriented and therefore quite strongly biased group can - without being questioned - do something like this to a scientist who uses observation as a base for any findings he makes..
This is the kind of world we live in.. uuuuu very baaad...
