Dimensional variation on a flat plane or testimony to light
A flat piece of expanded metal displays an almost magical transformation through reflections & light captured on its flanks. The other side is sky. Some lens distortion correction made in PS + curves & sharpening.

gerard sexton  Barbara nice to have you visit one of my images & take the time to leave a remark. I am sorry that the effect has been to hurt your eyes! but I do understand what you are saying. Thank you for your praise it is very welcome.

Great photo. Bravo.
gerard sexton  Dragan so happy you like this it is made of nothing but light & reflection in what is ordinarily a dull & sterile structure! I have been meaning to enter the debate on Originality that you added to very wisely but unfortunately each time I try I get side tracked! I will try again tonight.
Dragan M. Babovic  Thank you Gerard, glad to read this. Regards, Dragan.

I am back here after a while. And stumbled upon this. Was wondering at an odd color combo until I discovered it is just sunlight playing on metal! Gerard, you never fail to amaze me! :)
gerard sexton  Srin I apologise I overlooked the fact you commented here its much appreciated too! It is difficult to work in the confined space at the place I took this the angles are awkward & it demands attention to detail so that the best framing is made. I already mentioned before that in flat light this place is ugly but in the right sunlight the interior comes alive!

Not to take away anything from your sports photos that are excellent, but....it is a pleasure to see you fall back into the artsy mode every now and then. Just like that rainy day phase of yours-- some of my faves to date. Such a great eye you have, Gerry. A fascinating urban abstract-- beautifully done!
gerard sexton  Hi Mandy thanks for your kind words. I have noticed that my own stuff has lapsed preoccupied with sport & my back gardens nature offerings. But these places are going nowhere & my eye while it functions is still actively searching new ideas there will be more for sure just have to make them such that they wet the taste buds of 1x so you can all see them! Have a great weekend!

That is a spectacular image. Initially before i read anything i thought it was the facade of a building.
gerard sexton  Rennos yes exactly & thats the appeal the light cleverly tricks the eye into suggesting that the flat surface has more than one dimension. It is images like this that really I love as they are unique! Thank you for your kind words.

what a fantastic abstract Gerry!
gerard sexton  Cheers Nic I am always looking for something original often only finding something unusual. This is in fact the same metal structure that gifted me the B&W abstract in my PF Euclids table!

Gerry, A true abstract for sure, interesting too. I am still attempting to fully understand your description. Since I really like the image it probably does not matter ...still..how large is the expanded metal..and what is the expanded metal? Help this silly lady here. :) Congratulations...Phyl
gerard sexton  Hi Phyllis we have a footbridge over the dock here & at either entrance there is a lift shaft & a set of steps. This construction is clad in this flat expanded metal just sheets of galvanised steel or aluminium with holes in. On a sunny morning at the right time (angle of light is important) the sun creates an amzing set of patterns & shapes within this construction it doesn't last long & is difficult because of all the actute angles & limited space between walls to get shots without a great deal of distortion. I keep trying when I remember so its an ongoing "project" of sorts! Thanks for your feedback & interest. You are not a silly lady!
Phyllis Clarke  Amazing what light can create. It is a good little story. Now don't you laugh..but I have these shower doors with a retro sort of gold pattern on them.and of course they go back and forth..and every day, at different times of the day, and depending on how open or closed the doors to the shower are, and if the bathroom lights are on..that determines the pattern. I totally taken by these shapes - you l know I like abstract images. I have tried to get the tripod in there but there is so little room and without it..you don't see much...anyhow..I am forever chasing light...especially morning light. :) Thanks for the explanation...You did not say HOW BIG the metal is...????
gerard sexton  The size well these panels are perhaps 3' by 6' screwed together to create a box structure that encloses the stairwell. Getting this on here as got my juices going again I will go back in the morning if the light is right. Have a nice weekend.
Phyllis Clarke  Thanks Gerry..that puts it into perspective and his helpful.

Great photo Gerard! Astonishing what artists like you can create with a piece of metal, light and a camera!
gerard sexton  Pure luck really Guido I stumbled upon it & the shapes fascinate me. Thank you for your compliments.

I like it -- my Engineer's Eye loves such graphic scenes!
gerard sexton  ...thought it might & therefore you see what I see though my engineers eyes are more arty farty eyes! But thats the point look deeper & in the right light almost everything can be turned into a thing of beauty.

Terrific one this Gerry. You really had me scratching my head ... and that even AFTER I opened up the thumb. Super stuff. Much like Tony I was expecting this to be tweed or something cricket(y) -alike.
gerard sexton  Cheers Andre these are often taken when I am up early & bored! its a difficult place to frame an image but with determination & patience they are there to be found. I must go back soon...

Thought it was a close up on the stumps Gerard, very unusual for you but well done none the same.
gerard sexton  Ah ha see hidden talents must be my art school background though I must confess many of my abstract images will never grace these pages! Thanks for your good words.

Deceiving to the eye. Glad you explained what it was. I was wrong, I thought I was looking at the side of a building and it's windows! Great work.
gerard sexton  Lela yes thats what I saw this place is so dull without the early morning light dancing upon its surface. Glad you like this thanks.
Jacob Tuinenga 11 months ago
Excellent captured image, I am still keep looking.
gerard sexton  Yeah it has that sort of quality though flat the appearance is of a two dimensional image. I am happy you like it as I am happy to see this published
