so.. strange... small, big, young, old... all in 1 picure... and... it gets even more complex because the childs face/expression is like an old man...
1000 stories ...
Andre du Plessis  I like that:). Thanks for taking time out to put your view here. I was hoping that the fingers, the hands and the expression all together in this will evoke some thoughts. So your comment is pleasing to read.

Fine image full of emotions, the title is very well chosen as well ,there is an indication of it in the image as well, the pressure inflicted by the adult on his left forearm is very evident, yet it is difficult for me to interpret the exact meaning of his expression,I guess I have lost that kid inside me.
Andre du Plessis  That you could not have lost ... impossible! Or maybe some of just us want to cuddle up next to the dog, draw that child's blanket up to our chins, and regress into the non complex and non challenging environment of being a child again. i would like that very much:) On a more lucid note - thanks for the observations and your comment, Regards, Andre

A lot of emotion in this one, Andre. What's the story? Was the kid just wary of the camera, or were you pulling a scary face? ;)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Kim. I think that this expression on the boy's face, him pushing back, and the adults arms seemingly holding him down, or comforting him - all feels and looks so familiar to me. In my day job I have had to do anaesthetic procedures on many children, and invariably they can be terrified, so you will understand that this particular image will resonate with me. In this case I went into a very dark shack, where some 10 Xhosa folks were gathered around a TV, and they were watching a Xhosa program. One of the mothers was dressed in cultural garb, and I remember her holding a decorated wooden knife of some sorts. It was covered in bead work and she explained why she was holding this, however, the exact significance now escapes me. I did some portraits of some ladies sitting against the wall, and afterwards asked for this boy to go and sit on one of their laps. In the process this boy became frightened, and while all this was taking place I took two frames. On reviewing the images last week, it struck me that a crop and some editing was possible on one of the images, and this was the result. Much like 'The Story of Africa' in my collection, this was a candid capture, and the value could only be extracted with a crop and quite forceful editing. Hope that helps:)
Kim Ayres  Thanks for the detailed reply, Andre - it enriches my experience of the image :)

Andre,

I've said this to Ursula and now its your turn...."you are either going to inspire me, or make me throw my camera away......I'll start with inspire and see what happens."

Oh did I forget :-)....this shot is stunning, so full of emotion and story. You should run a B&W Masterclass

Cheers Chris
Andre du Plessis  Hi Chris. The image might seems very strong, however, it was taken in a rush, and only on reviewing this file from January did this image appear to hold some potential. However, it needed editing, and a crop to make it work. So there is opportunism involved. For that reason the 'luck' factor played a large part here. For that reason you should not do the latter, but rather go back review all those pictures that you have grown tired of. For there might be a surprise lurking somewhere. take care, and hope to hear that you are soon visiting the Big City again.

Andre - Trepidation - a great choice of title for it matches the look on this baby's face...it is the fear of the unknown. I think you captured a universal feeling here. Unfortunately, we do not all have the support that this child has - clearly seen by the hands and maybe arms that support him. Seeing that support one knows that it won't be too long before this child is smiling again. Congratulations on this beautiful shot. My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Morning Phyllis. I was unsure about the title. Initially wanted to go with a more 'fear' orientated title, but as you say, the arms suggest that older people are trying to comfort this child. The expression on his face also did not warrant 'fear' as strongly, but more the uncertainty about what is going to happen. I just noticed that Kim up above asks for the story behind this, so I shall go and tell more up there. Thanks for saying how you read this - much appreciated, as always. Andre

Andre, your work is evolving and i realy like watching the process. The emotion in this image is what gives it that something extra. Well Done!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Don. What's it like down there in Zambia today? Don't I just wish!!:) However, probably just as good, because then I will have so many frames that I'll have to give up the day job! Thanks for the comment and keep me posted

face and hand are so powerrful, Andre. Wonderful done
Christoph
Andre du Plessis  Hi Cristoph, yes, as i mentioned down below, I tried to lend a sense of fear and confusion to this, and personally really enjoyed the editing. I worked up a few renditions, but this rather dark one just felt the more appropriate one. So I'm really very pleased to see that it came trough. Thanks!
Beautiful work!!!

Andre you're Rock! this picture really amazing!!
Andre du Plessis  Many thanks - glad that you like this. I was hoping that there seems a sense of confusion here with that face and the hands, thus the constructed vignette etc. Regards!
