Cricket: of cream teas & balls wizzing past your nose! Have you got the balls?
The batsman Chris Wright takes evasive action to avoid a short pitched ball in a LV DIV II Championship match at Whitgift School May 2011. The ball weights between 155-163 grms & has been recorded at traveling in excess of 150kph!

That looks like an in-swinger to me, very good Gerard. :-)
gerard sexton  Funny I never really get to know how the ball pitched or what the ball is doing I read the game from reading the face of the bowler or gauging the state of the game! I will bow to your better judgment. Thanks for stopping by my friend maybe see you in York???
John Parminter  Nope, there are no hills in York and it'll be right in the Autumn primetime for colours so I know where I'll be....

great shot, looks like he at least has the discipline not to raise his hands to fend off the ball. It might have been a nice height to hook
gerard sexton  Thank you Phillip.

He bends like Mark waugh but fails to watch the ball asMark Waugh used to do. Great shot ... I mean by gerard sexton and not Chris Wright! ;)
gerard sexton  Thank you Srinin & Mark Waugh had a spell playing at the same county as this guy! bear in mind Chris Wright is a bowler not a recognised batsman but that day was also special because i witnessed Graham Napier equal the world record number of sixes to be scored in a first class cricket game he now holds this impressive record with Andrew Symonds.
Srinin  Thanks Gerard for the extra interesting info!

Wow, another great moment captured Gerard, this is all about timing and probably knowing the game!
gerard sexton  Thanks Jan yes knowing the game has got big pluses but also can draw you into what is unfolding & that can be distracting! As they say its all about getting the money shot!

Gerry...what great little story with your shot. It helps to understand because for a moment I thought he was like me....I use to make that same move..only the ball was usually about three feet away..but I always thought it was about to hit me....I guess his instincts took over...and good job they did. My question to you -is how did you know? How did you know he was going to make that move? :) Congrats...Phyllis
gerard sexton  Phyllis to be honest I didn't know he would respond like that. Put it like this it takes an enormous amount of concentration to follow every ball. In one day there will be as many as 576 balls bowled. There are two ends so half of those will be bowled to the batsman at the furthest end half to the end where mostly the batsman will have his back to me. Technique is critical in securing focus & catching these moments but I may miss as many as I get or more! Watching the ball is difficult but predicting its trajectory is easier. Reading the game as well is equally important in making the luck needed to get these sorts of dramatic shots. Thant ball is rapid & very hard it hurts if it hits you. Two weeks ago I got a similar shot the ball that time hit the face guard I saw the distorted metal afterwards helmets have been around for 20 years & are now essential protection. Playing myself I had a ball hit me in the middle of my forehead which you could say explains everything! Best wishes & thanks.
Srinin  I like your careful and detailed explanation for many here may not comprehend the game of cricket very well as it is played in so few countries. I was hoping to see some action from the last day of the Cardiff Test here... Tnx.

Great shot....I think he is EBW (Ear before wicket)

Cheers Chris
Srinin  EBW? Good one there, Chris Dixon!
gerard sexton  ..precisely or more likely NBW. Cheers mate.
Srinin  If it were to be Derek Randall I guess it definitely will be NBW! Lol!!!
