In response to the post which says that technical perfection does not move a photograph into the artistic category, I dont disagree with that, but on 1X, I've been told many times that only photos which ARE technically perfect are accepted which is why I was wondering why this photo was accepted... not to imply that 1X plays favorites with its members or anything...

Beautiful shot Ken.
I'm a big fan of Georgia O'Keefe, and studying your shot reminded me of one of her abstracts.

Yes, the color and light are magnificent; but the texture! I could stare at this for hours just to revel in the tactile qualities it embodies. Thank you for sharing this.

This is most likely a slot canyon, not a cave. A friend of mine often quotes the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, who once observed, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a person to see what he already knows." I disagree that artistic quality has anything to do with originality. Otherwise, we would all listen to Mozart once and be done with it, and would simply have to stop pursuing photogtaphy altogether.
Andy Cogbill  I absolutely appreciate that you disagree with my point, one to which I don't fully subscribe, either. Slot canyon or cave, I'd like to think that we could use the photos we've already seen and taken to approach similar or completely different subjects with new context. I'm certainly not saying that I disagree with those who've said this shot is visually striking, but this subject has *always* been visually striking. I would like to see a reinterpretation, rather than a replication, of this common motive.

Ralf's comment here addresses my questions about this shot perfectly: While the colors are, indeed, amazing, I can't quite get past the fact that it's yet another photo from the inside of these caves. I think I've seen hundreds of them. And, to your own point in "Photography is not a spectator sport," technical perfection does not move a photograph into the artistic category; originality does. Would love to see this from another angle, or maybe at night. Then the subject matter would do the job it needs to do.
Wow. What fantastic light! Brilliant and the quality is simply great.
