Awesome shot Lex! Can you please explain the flash duration... 1/128 still seems pretty slow for a bullet. How did you manage to basically freeze the action?
Lex Augusteijn  1/128 is about 40 microseconds flash duration, this is enough to get my bullet reasonably sharp.
Lachlan Kent  Ahhh... I see... I thought this might be the case... Thanks for the explanation

and the most important thing is not the picture?but the idea
Lex Augusteijn  Thanks Sek, I agree. I guess this holds for many pictures.
But given the idea, one needs to actually implement it.
Choose composition, lighting, timing in this case.

I'm curious what kind of location you used? It seems like you would need a really specific type of area big enough for all your gear and the lighting set up, as well as the gun shot.
Lex Augusteijn  It is just in my home. Camera and flashes are not that big, and if you shoot from close enough, you do not need that amount of space, and aiming is easier as well. Also, timing will be less critical, as there will be less spread in the bullet position if you capture the event close to the gun.

The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression...
Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lex Augusteijn  Wow, that is a lot of praise to cite Cartier-Bresson.
But I like the citation, it is well phrased and so true!

loved it right from screening. Curious about how you synchronized the two events, drop and bullet? Manual or automated in some way? A really great shot, congrats!
Lex Augusteijn  Actually more than two event:
- two colliding drops
- gun shot
- camera shutter
- 2 flashes
All synchronized by electronics.
I used two flashes, one from the back to illuminate the drop, one from the front to get some reflection on the bullet.
Especially the flash synchronization is very critical, due to the fast speed of the bullet. It requires a precision of 10 microseconds, otherwise you will see the bullet in two locations.
Art Lionse  pretty impressive, thanks for sharing!

Nice idea and an appealing picture.

Exposure: 1/10secs?, I guess the flash was strobed at much higher speed.. what flash strobe did you actually use?
Lex Augusteijn  Flash was 1/128, which is about 40 microseconds.

and bullet don't let drag on water ?
Lex Augusteijn  You mean drag by air flow?
I only see this when I shoot much closer to the water surface.
A.G. photographe  thank you for reply !

Nice !
I've tryed the same but the projectile is a little blur.
My flash isn't so fast... :-(
Lex Augusteijn  Thanks Jean-Marc.
One of the screeners thought it was fake.
It is real however, just proper timing and a short flash.
The only PS work was some lighting and sharpening.
Jean-Marc MANGIN  Hi !
What kind of flash do you use ?
