Another masterpiece, with an impressive fluid shape, and nice studio light. It's very kind from you to mame such a master explanation. Not everybody gives so many details about his "making of". Thanks a lot.

Great, I want to know the speed and time of this pic please.
Dave Nitsche  Ok... this might take a second. First, stop motion 'generally' isn't caught with shutter speed. Camera's generally can't get quick enough speeds to stop really fast moving objects. The shutter speed on this shot was a 250th I think. Not fast enough to stop anything really. The key to this kind of photography is "Flash Duration".

I use hotshoe flashes that I fire using a remote trigger. The flash duration (the length of time the burst of light coming out of a flash lasts) is anywhere from 1/500th of a second to 1/1000th of a second at full power depending on the flash you have. Modern flashes allow you to reduce the amount of light output. Its rated in Fractions on the flashes I use. 1/1 is full power, 1/2 is half power and it goes to 1/64th on some of my flashes and 1/128th on others.

When you decrease the output of the flash you're also decreasing the flash duration and it's almost exponential. Let's say my flash is 1/1000th of a second flash duration at full power. A chart showing duration would almost be (this is scientific by the way but close enough for an example)....

1/1 - 1/1000th of a second
1/2 - 1/1000th of a second (half and full have the same duration
1/4 - 1/2000th of a second
1/8 - 1/4000th of a second
1/16th - 1/8000th of a second
1/32nd - 1/16000th of a second
1/64th - 1/32000th of a second - quick enough to stop a hummingbirds wings in flight

Now, the problem with this is that once you decrease the power you're decreasing the amount of light the flash puts out. In other words you need a bunch of flashes to do shots like this. I think this was shot at 1/32nds power with about 6 flashes.

I hope this makes some sense for you. It aint' about the shutter, it's all about the flashes.
Mikhail Shlemov  Thanks for explanation. It is really art work!
