Ribbon lightning hits a tree

Ribbon lightning (also called Staccato Lightning) occurs when the bolt consists of several parallel strokes giving the visual impression of a ribbon.

This one has ten distinct strokes. Five of them are easily visible and the rest require 100% close up.

Przemyslaw Wielicki Thank you very much Harry! The storm was the heaviest one I have encountered. The sky was continuosly lit by distant lightnings for 3 hours after main strike.

How on earth did you get this shot, jawdropping incredible!

Przemyslaw Wielicki It was very heavy storm with fast moving front, therefore I had lightnings first and then rain. I knew this place well, it was a bit on a hill with trees spread around, so it was rather sure that get a strike. The rest is simply technique - tripod, cable release and long exposure (ca 100 sec.)

Przemyslaw Wielicki I was quite far away (about 1800 m. in stright line) and in a quite safe place :-)
The final picture is cropped from original frame (which was horizontal by the way) and covers about 30% of the original. Also the main strike of storm went rather in front of me than above me, fortunatelly :-)
In fact, I encountered an ideal conditions for shots of lightnings.

jak tez ci sie udalo zlapac taka chwile?
naprawde podziwiam...to tez chyba trzeba miec stalowe nerwy zeby wyczekac spokojnie taki moment

Obserwowalem uwaznie, jak burza sie rozwija i co jakis czas zmienialem kadrowanie korygujac nastawy glowicy. To miejsce jest dosc eksponowane i sa pojedyncze duze drzewa, wiec bylo dosc pewne, ze tam cos uderzy. Naswietlalem klatka po klatce (okolo 100 sekund jedna ekspozycja) do momentu az odpuscilem, bo wyladowania trafialy juz o kilkaset metrow ode mnie. To drzewo jest 1800 metrow od miejsca skad robilem zdjecia.

Monique nie no..szacunek ci sie nalezy...i to ogromny!

Pozdroweinia sle...i czekam na kolejne odslony :)

jak to zlapales??

Przemyslaw Wielicki Staram sie bacznie obserwowac, w jakim kierunku burza sie przemieszcza i w pewnym sensie przewidywac w oparciu o uksztaltowanie otoczenia, gdzie moze przylozyc.
W tym przypadku mialem na oku otwarty teren, na lekkim wyniesieniu, z pojedynczymi drzewami. Bylo bardzo prawdopodobne, ze cos zlapie, ale mialem duze szczescie, ze byla to akurat wstegowa. Od strony technicznej zadnych nowinek - statyw, wezyk i dlugi czas (tutaj 96 sekund). Pozdrawiam!

Przemyslaw Wielicki Dziekuje! Ja na szczescie bylem odrobine obok frontu burzy, ktory przesuwal sie przede mna od lewej do prawej. Zdjecie jest mocno wykadrowane (ok. 30% calego kadru), wiec wyglada to jakbym byl blizej :-) W rzeczywistosci, w linii prostej bylo ok. 1800 metrow.
