Wonderfully dramatic and high-contrast landscape image, Clyde. Fabulous composition. The more I look at it, the more I find to appreciate in it!

Excellent shot - and especially so (for me) in black and white. And that dark sky adds the drama..Congratulations Clyde. My best, Phyllis

Indeed a very nice composition. I cannot say how i would have photographed it. Perhaps i would never considered to photograph it:-) Anyway i also see some halos but this is not a complain but more an indicator that NIK is not that perfect especially when it comes to such reduction in size. But i assume the original and of course a print will not have this. Yes the noise/banding is a typical Nikon problem with the new sensor generation on high contrast pictures. Anyway for me it is very interesting that a simple motif can be photographed and presented nicely and create a nice mood and a pleasant feeling.

Nothing special in your photo (I mean subject) yet the image is special, it has that something that just makes it wonderfully work.

Congrats.
Clyde Beamer  Thanks man!! Special is always in the eye of the beholder for sure...

Dude! Your JT images just keep getting better. Great light and POV here. Congratulations.
Clyde Beamer  Well thank you my friend! Gonna have to give you a tour someday! This photograph and others from this trip are examples to me of how you begin to mature in your eye for a place or a certain subject once you have explored it over time and repeated visits. As I said below, just part the car in this place and start walking out into the scene, walk slowly, walk around a formation. You will be amazed at what you see...

That is very nice Clyde.
... but once again for a published pic I wonder about sharpening and contrast. It's a fact that my monitor sucks but aren't S/T too much here ? (see the halo along the right part of the rock). What about the version you print (if so) ? I personally feel this one would benefit from having more mid-tones, whatever the media to present it. Natural light is spectacular enough.
Congrats anyway,
Faddoush  On my screen I can not see any on any rock. But there seems to be quite some noise in the sky....makes it feel more like film than digital.
jacques philippe  Not a halo stricto-sensu, but the thin light banding on rock edge /transition with sky is an obvious result of sharpening+contrast+jpeg compression. The shot is really good, but not sure the editing does justice to it. I would not elaborate on that if there were not so many other published pics with the same trend of oversharpening and overcontrasting. But there are.... Anyway just my 2cts.
Clyde Beamer  Yep, you comments are fair enough I suppose. The b&w conversion was done in Nik Silver Efex, trying to match into some film I shot. I didn't get this particular scene well with the F100. And, yes this conversion is strong and the "Structure" tool in Nik is similar to sharpening and gives similar artifacts... I haven't tried yet to print any of these from this trip to JT. I will probably do some printing in the next few weeks, I have a couple of friends who just got wide format printers...

i like this photo for strong composition and excellent feel of dimension
great idea, great photo
Clyde Beamer  Thanks Stalker, it's a wonderful place where this type of scene is everywhere you look. Just park the car anywhere along the park drive and walk out into the rocks and trees and you will fall in love...
Stalker  WOW
Dear Clyde, can you tell me where is this great place?
Clyde Beamer  Joshua Tree National Park, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles off Highway 62. It's due north of Palm Springs.
Pedro Uranga  An image with great force, congratulations.Well known place.
