I'm sorry I hadn't commented on this image earlier. I like it from the beginning, largely because it seems lively without being forced. Of course the model/dancer is attractive...and look at all that hair!

I get the notion that your model is an experienced dancer. Her arms and legs, working in opposition, are also harmoniously arrayed. The important left arm isn't hidden behind the big hair as it might have been...maybe you made sure of that yourself. Her expression is one of aplomb, appropriate for a dancer to do something that others might find difficult (e.g., leaping in heels and landing on one foot with hair flying.

Why all the lights? Looks like you have about four lights...maybe three. The crossed shadows on the floor could be distracting. That's one of the things I worked very hard on in mastering my dance lighting. If I used multiple lights, I did my best to keep the number of shadows on the floor to one.

I think we've discussed seamless paper backgrounds before. I seem to see the point where the paper kinda bends from the vertical onto the floor. Depending on the available space, I will make the radius as large as possible and pull the dancers forward. Sometimes that calls for using 12' rather than 9' rolls of paper.

All in all, this is a good, energetic dance photo with lots of motion, good lines and dynamic tension in the frame. I'm sure the dancer is happy with her photo.

Hope this helps,

King
Lev Tsimring  King, thank you very much! Nesli is a good tango dancer working in the dance studio where we take our tango classes. you hit on a few things which I had noticed myself, but was not able to fix either by physical limitations or by my lack of experience. The bend in the paper was a problem, furthermore the depth of focus was such that wrinkles on the background were visible in the original and had to be smoothed in post-processing (since she was moving, I used f/7 or something to make sure she is in focus). But since I took it in my home, I just did not have more space to work with, I used up as much as I had :). As for multiple shadows, I would love to have a single clean shadow, but how would I do that with multiple light sources (I wanted to highlight her hair and body with the contre-jour light). Maybe that again boils down to having more space and placing some flags to block extra light? would you share your experience?

Lev Tsimring  thanks Jennifer! can you imagine my disappointment when the "full-length portrait studio" challenge was announced on DPC 3 days after this shoot? :) (I don't do them often, usually only when friends ask me)
