Although I admire all your work, I think this photo is one of your best!Excellent photo, except the man, the expressions of girls at the window, the shadows are really stunning!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Christos. I am never keen to work outside in the sun, as i never like the tell-tale and irritating shadows that direct sunlight gives over a face. However, down in SA at present, and have decided to incorporate fill flash in future, so that I can do more work outside. So that will be my challenge for 2012. Many thanks for the favorable comment ... much appreciated.

For sure I love this one, Andre! There are at least two stories in one image...

Loove the shadows :)
Andre du Plessis  Thanks ... and sorry for the very late reply. Yes, this presented itself uninvited, and I thought that I'll try to make the best of it. Long time no see ....? Hope that you are well, and missing your new work here.
a fabulous portrait, Andre, love the shadow play!!

My idea in the screening was that this shot is real three in one, each have its own subject, story and POV,
this is an excellent composition and a fine shot.

Again so original!!! I like it so much, Andre...! So, I imagine you were inside, taking some astonishing shots and you decided to see the sun a bit, went out, changed the ISO and time, and booom! there's another masterpiece. They all seem so easy coming from you...:)

strong Andre !
Fine expression of the "cool" guy, and such a beautiful background where the cuttie is communicating with these lovely shadow people ads a lot of aditional strenght to the photo ... bravo, impressive

A perfect social study Andre! I am a little jealous for this picture:-)

I think we all can see here very clear how important is the right approach to the people for street portraits. Capturing such scene without interfering the scene to build up a relation in a common sense and not as a photographer is so important and you have shown this here again Andre. And all this with a wide angle lens! Respect! Oh my, i have to learn so much:-))))))

Andre - what to say? You amaze me. You do. This is a fine example of taking what could have been quite an ordinary shot, and giving it an original twist with the shadow play. This photo of yours has more of a universal feeling to me, than others you have done of children. You could have taken this shot in the US! I see separate worlds, that these people are in at the moment - but yet, they all share common things and one seems to be a sadness maybe from poverty, illness - who knows..? The guy seems to be saying..look at us..here..He wants to be cool, but his eyes say more. The little girls in the window break your heart - it seems they are looking out onto a world of joy and playing, but it is not quite available to them. Well, you have created a small novel here. All of this is my own projection of course..but that is what makes me love photography! :) My best, Andre a big congratulations.

This is wonderful, Andre! - What an expression and sense of space that guy projects! I'd have been happy just to capture him alone. But then the figures at the window at a 2nd level of interest, especially as their attention is away from you, the photographer. And then the 3rd element of those wonderful shadows -delightful in their own right, but also clearly projected from whatever is grabbing the attention of the people at the window, and - oooh! Sublime :)

Love it!

Interesting Andre, the guy is very guarded, giving nothing away. You haven't broken through like you seem to have in other pics. But his unwillingness to reveal anything is maybe the whole point ;-) The little girl in the window is the detail that makes the shot for me. The shadows indicating something happening outside the frame, the sense that the guy doesn't seem own the space he is occupying somehow, and the lack of obvious relationship between him and the girls or the figures making the shadows preclude any sense of intimacy I think. Doesn't hit me the way your stuff usually does. I'll probably grow to think its your best shot though, knowing how these things go. . . sorry to ramble.

Andre du Plessis  I think that your summation of this is the closest to how I experienced this. There is discord - he is a young father, laboured with things that he never envisaged, yet he wants to retain that independancy. On my rejected image he was more himself - in the shade behing his sunglasses he became himself again, but as soon as he took them off, he had to take on the responsability and that shows in his bland expression.
The shadows are from the people across the street that came to watch what we are doing, and in some frames I managed to get their shadows recorded.
I recorded their shadows to add burden onto this 'free-wanting' man. I wanted to see how he feels about his disposition, and the blank stare in open sunlight was a disarming element in this composition.
The girls in the back were pre-occupied with what is happening with the onlookers - especially in what the baby is up to.
So in a sense I wanted to illustrate two family dimensions here - the main character (and less liked) in the foreground, and 'his burden' in the background at the window - even more pressure added onto him by the sheer innocent pressure of the neighbours witnessing an act of 'submission' to the family and responsabilities that he has. I hope that this make sense, but yes I agree, this is a departure from what I usually do, and so it was intended. Thank you for you most usefull insight, Andre
JBA  "Welcome to adult life. Whether you wanted it or not, you've got it. How do you feel?"
"I didn't think it would be like this. . ."
"How did you think it would be?"
"I dunno. . . I didn't really think about it. . . I just. . . I just didn't think it would be like this that's all. . "

Well deserved since I am guessing this is a resubmission. I always felt the competition within the frame & the odd angle of the window frame would hold this back but looking harder the prominent figure & the small play of the shadows & the girl in the window really make this like a story & the angle slowly becomes invisible. Bravo Andre.
