This beautifully warm and vibrant portrait communicates such heart-opening love, deep family pride and , yes, adoration for the one who is the family's central focus and hope. It is all there in this picture, so skillfully taken by you, Andre. The lighting and composition are stunning. The other of the same pair, "Caring Arms" makes it a story.
Noelle Clearwater  Ah, here it is. I thought it had disappeared. Glad it did not.

A whole world that I love photography. Looks, emotions, stories, black and white, the different generations in the same image. A true style that I love because I am admiring./

I enjoy your alive and exuberant compositions very much. You have a style and eye of your own, so with that im mind your comment is very appreciated. Regards, Andre

Great moment! Congrats!

Excellent work Andre again we see an image from another world a private world that you gift us with your work the chance to peep into. Once again you have captured the straightforward honesty of this woman & her grandchild the young innocence aged pride & confidence. Well done my friend a real treat.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Gerry. Very nice of you. Maybe some day you will join me for a drive-about down my way. Then you can see and experience it yourself. Good luck with your new long lens! Andre

Your fantastic light is here again..congrats.
Andre du Plessis  Hello Murat. I started with the curtains open, but soon changed that - it was simply too harsh, and the shadows that I wanted to fall across their faces seemed wrong in this compo. Thanks for the remark.

Great portrait, and that teapot on the left side ... perfect!

Wonderful image, Andre!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks for that KPK
Dear Andre,
it is always fascinating for me, how you get in touch with your subject(s).
I think, this is one of your secrets to create such stunning portraits.
Congrats to your D3. Now we share the same sensor, as I replaced my
Olympus with a D700. Same reasons: ergonomics. In the past, I used a Nikon F5 and now have a similar feeling, which is great.
Thanks for your greetings (coffee-shop).

LandyMan
Andre du Plessis  Hi LandyMan. Enjoy your new camera - I really like the way it processes low light. Thanks for the positive comment! Andre

Andre,

I couldn't sleep and went to make myself a cup of tea - of course only to find when I "just quickly" came to view OE that you've had another picture published.

Hearty congratulations on what I consider a fine, sensitive study of these two!

Go well.

Colmar
Andre du Plessis  ....and in the process you must have discovered that your 'White Out' was published as well!
I think that this Nocturnia Interruptus of yours might be a good thing for both of us:)
Many thanks for the thoughtful comment, Regards, Andre
Colmar Wocke  Andre,

My mind is full of so many "equations" in these recent days that I am, of late, struggling to sleep.

I need to go and have a "Black Out" and get back to sleep!

Thanks.

when you said you just came from Africa I got very excited because these are the kind of photos I thought we would be seeing any time. Fantastic portrait!
Are you shooting you brother's Nikon again? :p
Andre du Plessis  Hi Nicolas. I was on a roll those first days, but then had the fortune to go sailing off Tanzania. So that interrupted things a bit, with the results that I have only done very limited work. This time it is my own camera. Sold my 24 - 105 Canon lens, and was still waiting for promised delivery 24hrs before I flew. So cancelled my order, and in desperation exchanged my 5D body for a used D3 and this lens the night before. Now my fingers are happy again. I missed the ergonomics and lay-out of the Nikon cameras - something that I grew used to. Glad that you enjoy this one - now wish that I had more than the handful I shall try. Regards, Andre
PS...this 17 - 35 might be old, but I find it more user friendly for my type of work as compared to my brother's stunning 14 - 24mm, which limits me to a bit too wide.
Robert 2 years ago
Glad to see you back here! Somehow have missed your work so much!

Robert
Andre du Plessis  Thanks for that Robert. I did not manage to do much in the line of pictures in the last few months, but I was fortunate enough to do 3 one-hour trips to this community, and in the process get some fair work done at two families. Hopefully I can upload another few from this The Craggs series, however, the pleasure from this one alone is immense for me, and have no expectations. Best wishes, Andre

Andre, long time no see :)
Another portrait masterpiece. Love the old woman looking to camera, but at same time she don´t looking to camera (understend me?) and the happy expression of little girl, also the two hands togheter. Superb !
Andre du Plessis  Hello Rui! Thank you for talking about this. Actually, the older woman - her name is Ivy Davids - suffers from very limited vision, so I think that this is why she is merely looking in my direction. However, although that might be a considertion, she is a very proud lady, and this pride translates into this 'eleveted' gaze of hers. She may be old and living a meager existance, but she will never let that show. Many regards, Andre

Nice one Andre! I love the tones and textures in the skins and stove, but the expressions are wonderful :)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Kim. Today I saw your 'The Poet' featured on a photo blog of selected B&W's. Thank you for the feed back, Andre
Kim Ayres  Hi Andre - I don't suppose you can remember where can you?
Andre du Plessis  I have sent the link by OE mail
Phyllis Clarke 2 years ago
Andre..remember Shelby Lee Adams? Your photo today reminds me of something that could have come right out of Appalachia here in the US. That stove, her hat, the pose! Wonderful work as always. My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Just earlier today I was paging through photography books, reading about the acknowledged photographers, and she did not feature:( So I will have to go online again. I do remember her work, and very relevant that you should mention her again today to me, as I was searching to learn about style. Thanks Phyllis.
Phyllis Clarke  she is a very proud lady, and this pride translates into this 'eleveted' gaze of hers. She may be old and living a meager existance, but she will never let that show

And there you have it. : ) That is exactly what Shelby captures..no matter what..he shows them as strong, and powerful. I think that is the connection I immediately made. So you are the Shelby of SA...this place is still in SA even though it is off the coast? Or no?

http://shelby-lee-adams-new.blogspot.com/
Andre du Plessis  Hi Phyllis. LOL to your comment. Yes, The Craggs are close to the sea, however, up on the plateau. This plateau is a narrow 10 mile strip between the sea (where it drops down steeply), and the beautifully named Tzitzikamma mountains - the same name is given to this whole coastal strip - also called the Garden Route. And that is where I am from.
....and PS: Thanks for the Shelby link

Andre, happy to see such a touching image published, I thank you so much for this, please keep up this wonderful work! Take care of you!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Codrin. You cannot be as pleased as I am:) This the 1st published image with my new (but old) D3, and my 1st picture of this community - a place that is well known to me, but that I now see through different eyes since I do pictures. I am glad that
you like this. Andre

..and you told me you were fishing all the time...congratulations
Andre du Plessis  I had 9 days at Plett before the fishing trip to go and explore The Craggs - a settlement about 15km away from my place. So I went there 3 times. This stems from my 1st visit. I saw this lady sitting outside her house and stopped by. She told me the story of the Craggs, but it did not seem factual enough. I shall get more information when I go home again.

Great shot Andre! I liked it very much in screening.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Dalibor. Thanks a stack. This old lady is precious, and this is her favourite grandchild. They made it so easy for me. I only had to draw the curtains to get the direct sunlight off their faces.
