Twisted and Ancient
Evening descends upon the ancient Bristlecone Forest, 12,000' up in the White Mountains. These incredible, twisted shells stand amongst the oldest living things on earth. It was cold, hostile, and completely unforgettable.

mm767cap  Thanks Erin! :) Wish you could have been there to see it in person. It's a MUST do. I'm sure I'll be trying it again sometime.

Wonderful picture! I love the composition and colors! I am curious, however, as to how you got the stars in the background, behind the clouds at sunset. Was this just a single long exposure? or a layering of time-spaced exposures? I know sunset/dusk shots can be challenging. Thanks again for this beautiful shot!
mm767cap  Thanks very much Lars! It's two images. One just after sunset which left the magenta glow on the clouds and the tree, and then another an hour or so later when the stars were fully out. Then I blended the two together using the "Lighten" blend mode to make the stars pop through

Wonderful rosy light faintly on the ground and more substantial in the sky. The White Mountains are a wonderful place, unknown to mass crowds - fantastic combination for mountaineering :)
mm767cap  Thanks very much Ansel. It is a FANTASTIC place, and you are right... I only saw 1 other car there the entire time we were in the mountains.
