very strong expression from daily life...a story can be established by a person looking at this strong composition...
Andre du Plessis  Thank you Yavuz. At the time of submitting this I accepted this as a lucky opportunity. Now, 2 years later, I appreciate it more, and cannot believe the luck of this scene. Often when I do the Underground I these days I look and try to recreate something like this, even of a different story, but it simply does not present itself. Regards!

Super work Andre, everyone in a world of their own, although it does make me shudder at the 40 quid fine I have to pay for not having a ticket last week, and I swear the man with the i-Pod is my old physics teacher.
Enough rambling, just brilliant work!
Andre du Plessis  Hmmm...Fare doding:) Just reward for mot letting me know that you are passing through my patch.

great photo I love it.

A wonderful picture Andre!
Perfect in story, composition and technical quality as well.
And well worth the stress you had when taking it:-)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Helmut. Thanks for visiting. Yes, I leave this stuff for the Richards', or the Juliens' or the Robert H's.
Much less trouble to sit down and have a chat first..:) Take care, Andre

Stunning on so many levels, Andre.

Firstly it is just a wonderful photo in its own right. Nothing more needs to be thought or said about it for it to just stand out as something amazing.

In addition there's the wonder at how you can take such an ordinary everyday experience and turn it into something so much more

But then there's the technical aspects of gaining that amount of clarity in that level of light, and movement on a train.

And then there's having the sheer balls to click away in such a confined and public space.

I am awe-struck

Kim :)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Kim. Really lovely comment from you - thanks for that. Yes - I was a bit embarrased (not being a regular Street photographer), but I could not let the moment pass uncaptured. So had to grin and bear it, but in real terms - who cares, and who even remembers me snapping away in that coach. However, I now have a picture that lasts, so the effort was worth it for me. Easier to do this type of thing when you are in another city, and not your own. Regards, Andre

Although the photo is overall sharp, the eyes are focused on the newspapaper reading man in the centre. Well done, Andre.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Thomas. The man in the centre and the symmetry and pre-occupation with them all reading was my initial motivation, but only on checking the LCD did I realise that the traveller can add something different, so I re-framed for this. Thanks, Andre

how wonderful is this - and how easily i am transported back to my old life (pre-Africa, tube riding, packed like a sardine every day...) i don't miss that, i hasten to add, but a part of me does just what i would have then, sneak a peek at their newspapers
Andre du Plessis  Hi Eliza.....all the way from Kilimanjaro ! Wow!
Never in a hundred years will you probably want to live like this again , after what you have now..

Great capture of the essence of tube riding. I use to call them the mole people. Apart from the obvious connection, they are totally blind to their surroundings. Well done.

obviously - an excellent shot. great use of lines and light here, a wonderful shot
Andre du Plessis  Hi Dragan. Thank you very much. To be honest - I simply wanted symmetry, and the lines and convergence only really appeared when I viewed this image afterwards. So I emphasised these elements a bit in the processing, but not much.

What b/w image, so clear and busy atmosphere is so good controlled.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Dragan. Compared to my other work this image entailed less work. I underexposed by a stop because I was worried that the overhead lights might fool the camera, and luckily my guess was OK, so I did not have to work too hard on this one.

amazing composition, Im trying for few minuts to read the news paper here.. :)
Andre du Plessis  :) The chap in the middle remained quite serious. This is the 'bankers' train back from the Docklands 'bankers domain'.
He once gave me a look that made my knees tremble. So I am getting my own back at him now where I caught this stern chappie reading the 'Dating' section of the paper. :):)
The crowded looking of the image compared with the solitude of each face is awesome !
Great look Andre.
Andre du Plessis  Yes Jorge - I use the tube a lot, and sometimes you share close space with others, yet, as you say - everyone is in his or her own world. Sometimes I thing that the tube ride consitutes a littel escape away from work and home things. Sometimes I feel that people enjoy this easily accepted little time in isolation. Good / Bad - I don't know. However, the travellers from warmer societies find this very amusing. You see them stare at all these breathing people, who all of a sudden become no more than the equivalent of museum exhibits.
Jorge Goncalves Silva   I totally agree with you, Andre. I remember, when I was young to use the tube and felt the same you said. Sometimes, in those moments, we are alone with us, far away from everybody and everyone :) Regards.

This is how looks our today life....
everyone is lost in his own thoughts..
doesn't see the man who is standing right beside him...
We can stand in a big crowd and still be lonely...
Andre du Plessis  Dear Monique. Thank you for visiting my picture. I wroye a bit to Jorge 2 comments above. I often speak to people on the tube, and then all this simply drops away. I think that is is difficult for most of us to share close space with others. The same as going up a building in a lift, and all watching the lighted panel showing the floor numbers. Partly respect, partly shyness, but mostly conditioning, in my view. Best wishes, Andre

I love this! Sometimes I wish I lived where I had to take the subway so I could capture wonderful every day scenes like this.
Andre du Plessis  ...and sometimes I wish that I can get into a convertible and simply drive and drive into the country. Just like in Texas. Wanna swop:)
Sandy Powers  Tee hee. . .oh yes! Let's trade for a while, okay? I've had my fill of those country drives in Texas with harsh sun and flat terrain :)

Andre du Plessis  I want to see those oil things that look like birds and that go up and down.
Also I want to drive for miles and miles and then get to a road house where the sugar container
is that glass jar with the silver screw-top that has a hole in the middle....and then I want to photograph the proprietor with his daughter or son where they stand behind the counter, or where they stand at the gas section with a Valvoline signboard somewhere in the background. Off course - wearing their hats...
Sandy Powers  :) Andre, thank you! I just saw Texas thru someone else's eyes. I needed that. Maybe tomorrow, I will go take a country drive :)
Andre du Plessis  Your initial comment did the same for me:) Have a lovely weekend Sandy.

It's ok!!!!! :):):) Un caro cordiale saluto da Roma.

Nice street ! I like how the real subjects are not those reading newspapers but the one who is staring on the right of the frame. Making the viewer wonder what he's looking at...

Bob Patefield 3 years ago
This is a great photo Andre, but it makes me feel sad. So many people in such close proximity and they hardly dare look at each other. They are using the newspapers as nothing more than a barrier to give themselves a little more space and the iPOD/earphones to tell people 'don't talk to me'. They need to be giving each other hugs. That's why I love these guys so much....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCbOSrU0FmY
JBA  Bob, I don't want to be talked to on the tube. For a start, you have to shout. It's hard to know where to look as there are so many people's faces in your face and reflections of faces. . . It's an uncomfortable experience being in other's personal space and having others in yours. It's not sad, they are just minding their own business. They all have their 'London face' on, that's all ;-)
Bob Patefield  Perhaps I should start practicing the 'London face' for my visit :-| There....how's that?
Andre du Plessis  When someone talks to you on any London Transport (buses, tubes, trains) they can only be tourists or new arrivals or seriously suspect.
Sad but true.
That is why I like to go back to SA frequently. My London Face does not get packed in my suitcase.
JBA  Leave your London face behind Andre. Absolutely ;-)

Intimate at 24mm! How close were you? :)! I can read their newspapers. At an ISO 1600 it is so amazingly clear! :))))) A good diversified mix of faces here. Bravo...my best, Phyllis PS.next time the women..who will probably be putting on make up!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Phyllis. My 1st upload from London. Walked around the city the whole day with Francesca, and the only one or two worthwhile ones shot on the way back in the tube:) I'll try for some females doing the make-up thing. Would love to find a row of them doing the same. Only problem that in this Big Brother Society I'll probably be hauled off the train by the British Transport Police for that. Yes, these newer full frame cameras do good low light/high ISP work.

Andre,

This is a lovely picture - very agreeable composition and tonal treatment.

This is definitely one where only Black and White works, in my opinion!

Congrats.

Colmar
Andre du Plessis  Hi Colmar. The chap at the very back was looking at me, so I clicked until he looked down. Quite a departure from my usual ways, so have to admit I felt a bit strange. Have to have hair on your teeth to do this thing. Also, afterwards you cannot quite turn on your heel and walk away..., so that's where the fixation with the LCD screen comes in so handy:)
....post traumatic dissociation - very handy:)

Congrats Andre - Great capture in a fantastic exposure! :-)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Lars. Thanks a lot. For once there was some space to swing a lens - usually I have my nose up someone's armpit of the 6pm Jubilee from Canary Wharf.
