Close Up
An intimate picture of a suckling African elephant calf, while close to its mother. Even though taken in colour, this picture can easily be mistaken for a toned Black and White photograph! The rest of the herd, surely 30 all in all, was all around them - elephants are very social animals and stick together in large "families".

Colmar, very nice image of an infant african elephant and its Mother, Thanks,
one small but important point, I have lived and photographed Elephants in Amboseli Kenya for over ten years and have never observed suckling while the infant was kneeling, I think its legs are hidden by long grass. In any case really very nice
Colmar Wocke  Mike,

My thanks for your comment - I have actually modified the commentary I attached to the picture to reflect this that you've added here.

My thanks and especially for actually LEAVING the comment!

Absolutely wonderful Colmar, and touching too. You really have captured beautifully, a part of nature a city dweller would not have the option to see very frequently if at all Bravo. Phyllis
Colmar Wocke  Phyllis,

Thanks so much for your wonderfully-articulated message to me.

Believe me - even to me, who has seen elephant in the wild often, this was a special moment. Luckily my companion was with me - my camera!

Thanks!

Nice Colmar. I knew you had some of these somewhere in your stash. It's funny that when I saw a baby elephant nursing, it was pointed out to me to notice that he was not nursing under the hind end, but in the front. I had never even thought of this before.
This is very nice.
"Go well"
Johan Lind  @Jerry

You have to read Robert Sapolsky's "A Primate's Memoir"! He's a researcher who's spent looong periods on the Savannah doing field work on baboon behaviour and physiology. In that book he describes in a hilarious passage how he's been too long in the field when he for the first time sees elephant "breasts" and can't help himself thinking a bit too much about those strange huge "breasts"... Great book by a great writer.

Cheers

Jerry Berry  LOL.
I don't know that I want to go there :-)
Colmar Wocke  Jerry,

I am starting to empty the stash and am delighted that this picture was deemed acceptable here.

You know, I take so many different kinds of pictures - I have no clear style - so every new one that comes up is something special to me.

Thanks very much for your thumbs up on the picture - great of you!

Go well.

Difficult enough to get any picture published, let alone a "baby" one!

Much appreciated.
