This photo shows so much strength and beauty

Lovely! The model has wonderfully turned out feet too... as a dancer I respect the reality of the hard work this picture portrays
King Douglas  Thanks for your generous comment, krobinson.

Tell me more about your own dance career...and are you male or female?
krobinson  I am a female; I've been taking ballet for ten years. I am new to photography and have seen a lot of ballet pictures that are technically incorrect. Yours however is amazing! Was this picture taken in a studio with lighting and whatnot? or in a dance studio?
King Douglas  This was taken during renovation of a building that became the studios and home of the Boston Ballet Company. I was a member of the company from 1972-1974 (I'm old). The light is coming totally from the windows visible in the photo.

So how old are you? Are you a good dancer? Are you hoping to become a professional dancer? Do you live in a city where there is plenty of dance? Who is your primary teacher?--I may know him or her.

There are many other dance photos in my 1X.com portfolio, and others in my personal web site.

Thanks for writing!
krobinson  Wow the Boston Ballet that is AMAZING!! I'm from a small town (15 000) so there hasn't been much opportunity for auditions and things like that. I'm going to university next year for musical theatre so that will include some dance but not a lot (I'm young ;)). It's more of a passion. You possibly could have known my old Ballet teacher Jodi Kohal. She used to teach at the National Ballet in Toronto but has since retired around here.

Were you part of the corps at the Boston Ballet? Or a priciple? What Ballets were you in?
King Douglas  I don't know a Jodi Kohal...sorry...but I'm 65 years old, so unless you know someone around my age, I may not have known them when I was dancing.

I was in the corps de ballet, but because I was tall, strong and a very good partner, I got some good roles. It was a long time ago. I hardly even remember the ballets I was in.

But I did love dancing.

Great idea King !
King Douglas  Thanks Fernand. There's more to this idea than meets the eye. This room was to be one of the new studios being renovated for the Boston Ballet Company, of which I was a member at the time. I wanted to photograph a dancer in the space before the renovation was complete, so I walked over with a ballerina and this is one of the photos we came up with. The dance floor would be laid in sections over the 2x4 pieces of lumber she is standing on.

Dancers would be practicing the same step in the same spot in the new studios a few months later.

Two different worlds of textures and the shapes.
Two different temperatures.
One great photography.

Total command upon the subject.

King Douglas  Polonaise...a type of dance. How interesting to get a fine compliment from someone whose screen name has meaning in the dance world. Thank you.

What power in those feet and legs, great! Strong picture
King Douglas  Yep, power. If you saw the rest of her you'd be equally impressed. She is a ballerina...not just a pretty good dancer. In the professional ranks, no female dancer calls herself a ballerina until the title has been won by public acclaim. It is a kind of rank, like a general in the army.

Thanks, Patricia.
Patricia  I've met quit a few dancers myself. My dearest friend makes clothes for there dances. And when things get to much or deadline is comming and after another fit changes have to be made I sometimes help her. So every 'end of season' i'm there (besides the 'normal' performances). It's the final show when the whole company do bits from all the dances of the past year and after they mingle ;). It's modern and clasic mix, but it works the same way. The new dancers who think they are all that you don't meet next year.. But always i'm impressed by how they mix all that wonderful power with such gracefulness and beauty
King Douglas  Are you referring to Netherlands Dance Theater? I used to be a big fan in the late 1960's.
Patricia  No i'm referring to Introdans, founded in '71 though back then it was Studio L.P. :)But my friend started out at the Netherlands Dance Theater, she worked there for about 7 years :) but that was in the early 90's

Wow!! Beautiful, as always.Another one from your old time with the dancers?
King Douglas  Yes, another old one...but I'm going to create a new image today!

With my wonderful scanner and my digital darkroom (Photoshop), it is a great pleasure to explore my archives to see if I can't draw something more out of a negative, or apply something I've learned in the years since the original image was captured.

Thanks, Andres.

I like the symbolism. Good one, Mr. Douglas!
King Douglas  Symbolism? What symbolism?

Thanks, Martin.
Martin Gremm  If you don't see it, perhaps it is accidental symbolism, perhaps just a figment of my imagination... :)
