love this photograph, but not the title...
what about "thunderbird" ??
what the desert does with its clouds is pretty remarkable. you were definitely in the right spot at the right time! oh, and lightning is red sometimes, especially out in the red rock desert. i spent some time @ the navajo reservation in arizona and saw my fair share of red lighting. i just wish i could have photographed the stars... amazing. this photo brings me back there.

Wow. that is completely beautiful. Wonderful job.
Ah, the brilliance. Gorgeous light AND lightning. Loving the cloud formations as well.

Oh snap! Great color and a dramatic sky. The color of the lightning is indeed strange, but I think it looks good anyway. Wouldn't take much to bring it into the blues in photoshop if one wanted.

Ohh, very nice, indeed!
Drama and beauty. I stunning photo of Mother Nature "talking".
Dan Ransom  I like the idea of nature "talking," well said. To me, it kind of looks like the clouds form an arm and hand, and the hand is about to pummel the earth, while the bolt strikes in anticipation of the collision...

WOW a correctly impulsive shot! Unfortunate that the picture is so small !

great great!

Dan Ransom  Thanks Pascal, I think I uploaded the small version on accident. Not sure if there is a way to reupload an image at this point. I have one that is 750 px wide, I think this one is 650.
Ralf Stelander  You are more than welcome to reupload in a larger version! Just upload as usual and we will swap in a flash! All commentes and unique views will be saved!

Wow, what a sight! That lightning looks evil with the red color! How come it's red?
Dan Ransom  Thanks Ralf, I actually hadn't thought about the color of the lightning, but I'm sure it is because my white balance for this picture was something like 9600, or 11000. The sun had basically set already, but there was still some lingering light that is very blue in color (which is why the WB is set to such an extreme temperature). This must shift the bolt's color into the red spectrum.

Often, I think lightning is shot with a white balance of 3200, which shifts the bolt into the blue spectrum... That's my best guess, anyways.
Ralf Stelander  Yeah, that's what I thought. Anyway, it looks pretty cool with the red lightning!
