Wow, altough 1x claims onlye the "good" pictures comes threw the head of the needle on this site, but this picture provens wrong...again. Time after time photos that is just plain bad gets in, and some of us sometimes actually wonders; How is that possibly at all?

This is bad. This just lowered my high respects for this site and the quality of the photos in here. And this is not by no means ment as an insult the the photographer of this photo, but to something who is unfair to aloth of people out there. Alex

Balazs Pataki Kudos for having the balls'n'guts to write something like this. It only leaves one question: why do you think it's "plain bad"? If you know the artist, you'd appreciate it as a self-portrait - at least a photographer who doesn't include a camera and that "I'm very very serious" look. If you don't know him, you could still appreciate the nice tones and skin rendering on the technical side, and on the intellectual side the study in expressions - how close an expression of joy and pain can be. At least for me, it's more of both - as if laughing in pain. While this photo will certainly not change the course of history, I think your blunt critique is out of place here.
I agree however, sometimes I also ask myself how a particular photo could have been published because the quality is inferior or the subject dull, but under this photograph such critisism is like barking at the wrong tree.

Alexander Spernes Thanx for, actually something that i would like to call, a GOOD reply! I am to be honest about the photo, I would say the black and white is boring. There is no "message" or somewhat hidden message in it. It's a white wall with some light coming from the right. And I am not at all convinced by neither the expression in the face, or the body language. There is a sportswatch and a sixpence, not really something that makes me jump around in joy. It's even more sharp on the chest then in the face... And how is this a representation of the photograper?

I don't really think this photo has half of what is mentioned here. Sorry. And yet, 80% of the people who have made comment looks like they actually know the person?? That's weird.

One of the reasons why I wrote under this photo in the first place was that I saw so many pictures not get posted, but this did, under the screening. Photos that made me and others want to look twice, that told a story, that gave a feeling...yet, they had no chance. To bad. And as i said, nothing to do with the photographer, I don't know him, I bet you are great, but it has something to do with this site, and it actually leaves out pretty good photographers sometimes, and crushes their own rules. I think the final 1x screener the day this was posted should come out...say something. Or maybe be re evaluated again, because he just didn't follow their own rules. Sorry.

But he can take great photos, I have seen he's other photos, and they are great, some even amazing. So he can do alot better, that's my oppinion. I know he can, I have seen it.

Balazs Pataki The topics discussing pros and cons of screening already fill up gigabites of hosting space (and still counting!). This will always be so, until screening is a form of "swarm thinking" with as many criteria, both technical and emotional, as there are voting screeners. You are right, sometimes the results can be controversial, and I don't want to go into this any deeper, just adding a few more thougths about this photo. Yes, its success in screening could be due to the fact that many of us know the artist in person. One positive thing about it is that his approach reflects his character - no drama, no role-playing, no over-emphasizing the ego: all this happens very often in self-portraits. Another good thing is that the photo is funny. Or at least relaxed. As I said, the of expression and pain and joy can be very similar, if not the same, and this perplexity is another layer of interest here - but let's assume the artist is laughing here. This brings yet another advantage: it is good to see a positive face in the gallery. No tragedy, no drama, no very very meaningful look, no "every wrinkle tells a story" portrait. This is very refreshing - simply because there aren't too many portraits here going in this emotional direction.
To cut a long story short, the answer to your question - can he do better? - is yes. But that would be another picture. The other question: - does this photo deserve to be published? - is another yes, based on what I said above. But this is where subjectivity kicks in and the bottomline is, you have as much reasons to dislike this photo as I have to like it. Besides, you deserve a gold medal or something for the longest comment under a published photo :)) Peace!

this really is pathetic...how can anyone post or even allow posting something like this?
his expresion reminds me of a weak man...and the textures of the pic don't fit at all!!!
so it really is a bad picture in my opinion!
i think a lot of the photos in the screening section are treated with disrespect...and several ship-wrecks end up in the public profile by accident or by your mistakes!
i mean look at this pic..which part do u find interesting in it?
the drama?
let's face it!

Good work, Ricky. I'd get that elbow a bit further from the edge of the frame, or crop into it a bit. Free advice, and worth every penny you paid for it. :>)

Ricky Siegers Thank you very much King, I will watch it on my next experiment. Bit difficult just to vision yourself in the frame while you have 10 seconds plus running up and down...:).
But I am agree with you...next time maybe I should take it wider, so I still have some space to work and cut.
