Summer Silence
I find the best way to deal with an aversion to something is to tackle it head-on. I'm pleased with this attempt at photographing Summer greens, something I have struggled with but seem to be getting the hang of...
This is not an HDR image, just a single RAW file and a high contrast range due to broken cloud and sunlight.

Very strange. Me myself is a HDR-nerd :-) and I was 101% convinced that I just saw an HDR, a very, very nice one. But I belive you, sometimes the light can be stranger than you ever belived was possible. But, as in your case; you have to be there and you have to know what to do with your camera. Fantastic, thank you! (you made me want to go and visit Lake District)
John Parminter  Thanks Jonny, I didn't mention in the description that I used ND graduated filters to control the exposure. I'm not a fan of HDR processing at least for me anyway as I don't like the results, much preferring to use graduated filters or a manual blend on occasion if necessary.

Most probably my personal number 1
Your pictures of scotlands make mine so bad ahaha. I went to Scotland lask week, but the only good image I had was from Elgol.
John Parminter  Thanks Andrea, sometimes you have to keep returning to get the best conditions...

mr.parminter, how your photos just amazing on the exposure..?? can you give me the key please?
John Parminter  All pretty simple really poer, accurate exposure readings around the different parts of the scene, use of ND grad filters where necessary and an occasional manual blend of two different exposures if required, as was the case here as the sky was a litle too bright for one exposure.

spectacular!....I've taken a photo from almost the exact same spot as this but it was in the winter ice and mist. It's certainly a beautiful place and your photo really does it justice!
John Parminter  cheers Ian, it is the place to plonk the tripod, I've got winter ones as well but haven't quite got the one I want so I'll keep going back I guess.

Colours, sharpness, composition... but what I like most in this picture is the white fence, that gives a strong perspective line and leads the eye towards the centre of the image. A potentially disturbing element that becomes a plus in the composition!
John Parminter  Cheers TBM, that was my intention with the fence so it seems to have worked.

After all that whinging, you've pulled out one of the most impressive images on 1x in my opinion. Absolutely stunning, an inspiration!
John Parminter  Cheers Alex, just a lonely old shot of Blea Tarn, one of the most photographed tarns in UK...

Lordy...your landscapes are amazing, over and over again. Even your 1X.Com rejects cause that sudden inhalation of the breath that tells me, even before the image has registered in my consciousness that I'm looking at a great photo (and I hope you get the irony in the statement, "Even your 1X.Com rejects...").

Thanks for the education and morning treat...your portfolio.
John Parminter  Well thanks very much King, I appreciate your comments. I don't have any real complaints about my rejections, a few I would have liked to have been published for a wider audience to see but can't complain overall... :-)

Well, I just found out from my husband what a Tarn is and how up this view is! Not to mention the fell running part - of which we are both very impressed! I am happy to see that a Sigma lens took this shot - which is so vibrant and clear. It makes me reconsider my resistance to anything but Nikon glass. You have captured that Silence in the stillness here in your picture. The lake looks like glass. Such a wide variety of colors, and all so subtle. A big congratulations to you. My best, Phyllis
John Parminter  Aye Phyllis, has Bill told you that there is actually only one officially named lake in the Lake District, all the others being tarns, meres or waters. Bassenthwaite Lake being it, there are tons of tarns though such as this one.
If its any useful info for you, all my shots bar one here at 1X are taken using a Sigma lens either the 10-20mm f/4.5, 17-70mm f/2.8 or the 70-200mm f/2.8. Stile and Stoops was taken using the D40 and 18-55mm kit lens. I find Sigma to be a worthwhile and cheaper alternative to Nikon lenses and I probably place more importance on being in the right location at the right time than on equipment specifications, I'm not particularly tech orientated to be honest.

:)
JP
Phyllis Clarke  No actually - and it is not even a word in my vocabulary generally. So, I really learned something new. I have to ask you more about the lenses later..I am betting you use a tripod:) I have to look at some of the reviews now. Your photos are very very clear! :) Phyllis
John Parminter  Indeed I do use a tripod, infact the camera has been attached to it for so long that I fear it's now welded in place..:)
Another top tip if you want to explore landscapes, get some ND grad filters, they will I guarantee transform your images.

I like this one very much. Fine scenery, really effective compo, excellent control over the dynamic range, congratulations ... but the slight CCW tilt (or perhas non symmetric distortion?) seems distracting to me.
John Parminter  Thanks aral, I can see that you think the level of the tarn is rotated CCW but I did use a spirit level and always do for landscapes. If you scroll down with the right hand side scroll bar you will see that the distant tarn horizon is pretty much level but the closer left hand tree bank does appear to slope CCW. This bank does actually curve towards me which gives this effect and at 17mm probably exagerated somewhat.
I am always conscious of uneven levels in my shots but do appreciate you pointing it out as it is always good to hear other folks opinions.
Thanks,

:)
JP
aral  Yes John, I agree, you have a point. What seems to have tricked me is that the reflections of trees and mountain on the left are not exactly under the objects themself. In reality they always are, because the mirror (water surface) is guaranteed to be perfectly horiziontal. Looks like the distortion of 17 mm lens did the trick (to support this, the reflected image of the central fence is perfectly vertically below the object). By the way, great image.
John Parminter  I don't tend to find too much trouble from the 17-70mm @17mm but have to be very careful with my 10-20mm as that can introduce dramatic effects when used low to the ground, great for exagerating beachscapes though.. :)
Cheers,

JP

Your landscapes really are inspirational. I love that you are taking on something your are uncomfortable with and by all accounts, winning! Great shot.
John Parminter  It doesn't come easily though Patricia, I have to work a lot harder in Summer.

Voted for this photo - it's well composed and I really like the colours and reflection. The fence adds to it.

I like the color and the whole scene John, amazing picture.
John Parminter  Cheers Ricky, I was actually passing by this tarn to run up the mountains you see in the background but just had to stop as the tarn was so still so had to take advantage. It is by the way one of the most photographed tarns in England and a very pleasant place to spend a wee bit of time. I've photographed it many times in all seasons but feel now satisfied I have a decent Summer one of it.

Cheers,

JP

Yeah, greens are awkward aren't they? They can tend to look almost artificial sometimes. Probably a digital thing(?)Tweaking the yellows can make a difference. . great shot anyway JP, very serene.
John Parminter  It could be a digital thing Jon, won't make me swap to film though.. ;-)

Some colors look a little oversatured here, but i like the shot very much, the composition and reflections are wonderful
John Parminter  Possibly Sven, the greens especially. They aren't increased by me in PP but do come out of the D300 like this moe than other colours and is one of the reasons why I find shooting these type of scenes difficult. I think with greens being a close mid-tone you need a very accurate exposure of them. When there is no direct light on them they can look very bottle green, when directly lit like here they can look flourescent. I find it the hardest colour to get right.
Would like any other's opinions on shooting predominently green scenes please.
