Reminiscing
I took this photograph of Mr. Mario Gonzi (ex-Italian, 82yrs) in Le Treport, a fishing town in southern Normandy.
I had just returned from a street market, where I managed to buy a lovely old chair at a knock-down price, and while celebrating my good luck with a beer afterwards, I got talking to this very animated genteman.
He moved to this town many years ago, when he was appointed as chief construction engineer when they built the funicular railway at Le Treport, and have stayed on there since then, leaving Italy behind. I think that he does not want to be too far away from this funiculare, which he describes as the biggest achievement of his life.
His son committed suicide years ago - he showed me a picture of him. Apart from him talking about this sad event, he spoke about his Alsation dog that he once owned, and also joked that he looked quite a bit like Marlin Brando when he was young.
He asked me to take pictures of him (I have since left some prints for him at this Brasserie). The light was very poor at the time - just about dark - hence the noise present here, which I did not reduce.
I remember this chance meeting with fondness, and am glad to have this image as a reminder of that early evening.
He was using his hands constantly to gesticulate while talking, and I wanted them to be part of this image.
Thank you to everyone who assisted me in critique when this was initially rejected.

Andre, your photography (as always) is first class, and your words (as always) add so much to my enjoyment.
Geraint
Andre du Plessis  Many thanks Geraint. I am always happy when the story is enjoyed. I know pics should be 'free-standing' but some shots to me will not be complete without narration, as the events around capturing it requires that. After all we simly borrow the characters.. Regards, Andre
I really like what you have made here!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Marcus! Was a touch worried abut the noise, but Lady Luck was with me! Regards, Andre

Great image , Andre. I was surprised to see that it was originally rejected.
I started to lose faith in my own photography with all my rejections. I love
the stories.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Bernard! I think the 'losing faith' is universal talk here. We all feel the same - frequently.
But those good one's have a strange way of arriving unplanned - just keep on shooting!
Best wishes, Andre

Andre, you see souls with your camera and I really appreciate it when you share them with us. I love the picture; I love that you also share the story - thank you.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Deborah. I like to add the stories sometimes - just makes it more enjoyable, and gives some recognition to the subjects, even if they don't see it. much appreciated, Andre

Andre du Plessis  Hi Robert. Many thanks. I decided not to crop away, instead work on the obvious shortcomings as suggested in Critique. This time I got lucky:)

You just made me fall in love with the story...and with the man! what a life! and something else, first thing i am gonna do when i get back home, i am gonna look at my D300, see if my 1600 iso is not rust..:)
Andre du Plessis  Very glad that you enjoy the narration also. Most of my work is usually dome >640 ISO. Always seem to hang out in darl places:) Thanks Mihnea!

Oh, this just made my day, so happy to see this image here, Andre, don't know exactly what have you changed at it, nevermind, it is still a huge favorite for me! Great one, you know that I love it!
Andre du Plessis  Thank you very much Codrin! I reworked this from the original, moved the glass a bit closer to allow for the right frame to come in closer, introduced texture into his clothes, and other scattered improvements. Very relieved that it paid off:)
Andre du Plessis  ...and now I have noticed a glaring mistake in my post editing, where I 'forgot' to add in some blackness to the left of the glass stem. Guess that it is not too obvious, however, shall correct that and replace this one. If you did not ask me what I did, I would have missed that completely...

Has a kindly face, and looks like a gentlemen. I like the processing, as always from you, and see that a high ISO can bring good results. Bravo on this latest publication!
My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Hi Phyllis. Thanks! Yes, this was 1600 ISO. I had to keep the s/speed up a bit, as he was constantly moving. He is a very kind old gent - since your comment I have added a bit about him below the photo. Wishes! Andre

Love it!!!!!

Stefania
Andre du Plessis  Hello Stefania! I am glad that you like this with the little details. To me that is part of the charm. Thanks very much:) Andre
