One Moment
Trying out a 50 for a change from my usual 28/35 and 85. Not sure what to think of the focal length yet... but seems to work here without me being in their face, yet also not a mile away spying without interaction.

One moment and 5 people. You know of my story - we don't know of theirs. But we are all linked forever now.

PURE EMOTION.
Richard Ford  Or bewilderment! ;-)

Very good, Richard! Great charachters - each with an interesting expression. And the incoming from the left adds to the streetfeeling.
Richard Ford  Thanks Jimmy. I just shot before the time was up and didn't notice the walker on the left... but it actually adds more to the scene. Adds the dynamics that you mention. I have said it before and I will say it again. Serendipity is my friend. ;-)

Well captured, Richard:-)
Richard Ford  Thanks Ben. Good to see you still popping in now and then...

Oh yeah...this is superb work!! :)
The composition with the movement of the (wo?)man passing by is so good...
Richard Ford  That was unintentional but I had to shoot... half a second later and they all world have moved too much and ruined the shot...but it worked out well as it adds the perfect amount of dynamic motion to the scene and also gives a sense of the isolation of the three dudes amongst our life and how they are so easily ignored.... serendipity is my friend indeed.

Subtle, grainy, and it got published ;-) An achievement indeed. Nice, understated shot with a lot of empathy. maybe this shot struck you because you are feeling tired and drained with all the inconvenience and discomfort to do with your injury. You feel how they look ;-)
Richard Ford  They weren't happy chappy's at all. One moment and 5 people. You know of my story - we don't know of theirs. But we are all linked forever now.

woops! sorry to comment again, but only just saw the equipment you listed. i'm surprised that those skin tones didn't come out whiter since you used a red filter! well, from my experience of using one. which one did you use/own if i may ask?
Richard Ford  Red filters will always tend to make skin tones come out VERY white.....
Zaahir Essa  yeh i know! and here they aren't very white, unless i'm missing something. that's why i was wondering what filter you were using...

cheers
z
Richard Ford  Their hands are... I did a bit of highlight reduction because I think I messed the scan up.. but the hands are correct Red-Filter-White-Skin-Tone.... these guys are rural workers so their faces would have been very tanned too.
Zaahir Essa  ah i see! thanks for the explanation.

I kinda like the 50 as you used it here. Works quite well for you! Sorry to hear about the ankle.
Richard Ford  Thanks Deborah. Change is as good as a holiday. Going to go and shoot my 135 tomorrow... it is good I find, for me at least to stick to one lens for a day and really focus and get into that fov for mental framing and hunting.

Still have no firm idea or though on the 50. But as an experiment - I will use it again. Just not sure how I will "plan" to use it in the future though. For 28/35 and 85 I know why and how I use them. The 50 - just novelty now.... like the 135.

Nice one Richard and this one shows that grain is not an enemy and every images does not have to be silky digital smooth.
Richard Ford  Ta - though I think my scanning made it worse. I will try again at some stage... it was OLD film though. 1993 or so it expired.....
Ian James  Cool I shot the image that was published today on expired film it expired in 2007 which is obviously not expired enough as the result did not seem to be effected. I would like to get some really old stuff and give that a go. I am sure Ebay will have a rich supply.

Welcome back Richard, a very good moment captured here, like it a lot! Cheers!
Richard Ford  Thanks Codrin. This is still a BC (Before cast) photo... the AD (After Debt - from the hospital - 2K USD) ones will come in the following week. ;-)

Hi Richard, good to see you alive and kicking (and clicking? :)). Thanks very much for indicating the tech details - I wish more people would do so. A great street shot, old-fashioned in the best sense of meaning!
Richard Ford  Ha - as a geek I do like to get lost in technicalities at time. Especially when I am/was experimenting which this roll was used for...

very nice foto! i missed your film ones...:)
Richard Ford  Thanks. This is an older one that I over looked - shot a week or so before I broke my ankle, as I was so upset about being confined to crutches that I seldom powered up my photo computer. I hope to have my first rolls of post injury developed this weekend. I am keen to see if my new found quiet and graceful approach shows up in the shots.

Or does a limp count as quiet and "ungraceful" ?

excellent captured moment!
Richard Ford  Thanks Dave. In the origianl scene as I moved to shoot the three were all asleep and all over each other. I got made as I got close and they moved - but it made for a better shot. That is why I am never afraid of "disturbing" the scene because you often have to be bold - or otherwise you get flat....

So I see you finally figured out how to process the 1600, love the grain!
Richard Ford  Thanks Kevin, it is the 3200 native film that is pissing me off. This old 400 film pushed to 1600 is easy. I am quite happy with the versatility of all 400 speed films, be they old round grain ones or the new modern square grain ones. They look awesome from 320 to 800 and still very good at 1600 and good at 3200.

I think I need more scanning practice as I had to reduce the highlights a bit in this and the grain has a white feel to it... so if I reduce the light power for these shots as I was doing to try and get the 3200 film to work, I think I will get better results still. I guess that is why 1x has a "upload improved version" button. ;-)

Yeah Richard, happy to see you back ;)
Richard Ford  Thanks... I think it needs a little more contrast though. I have had a few shots recently - that seem to be VERY sensitive to the screen that you use to look at them with and the calibration of it. This shot looks great on the proper calibrated photo mac. OK on the mac book and atrocious on the DELL LCD in the office.... :-s

Zaahir Essa  contrast looks great to me. you mean there's people viewing this site without calibrated monitors? :) nice moment, looking forward to seeing more.
