The negotiator
A shot from the events of winter 1989. In the church tower to the right, secret police (Securitate) snipers were hiding, occasionally shooting at the civilians and soldiers on the square. Soldiers couldn't smoke them out, tanks wouldn't blow them out, so we came to a stalemate. This photo shows the moment when a soldier got out of cover and shouted at the bad boys, trying to make them surrender.

Well, this is a classic photo and a true documentary one also. When I read 'no name compact camera' I was even more impressed..goes to show you - that you can capture moments with little money if you have imagination and vision. It is not easy to find a photo like this one! I have to say I think you are very brave! My best, Phyllis

By the time of the Revolution I was only a kid, for me the only memories remaining were the cars signaling to each other on the road home from the winter camp in Baile Homorod, guys dressed in pull-overs in the TV when the old dictator should have been appearing, and the tears in my parents' eyes saying that this would be our first free Christmas. I found out the really bloody parts of the fights much later, from photos like this. I do not envy you for the chance of being there, but I respect you for that.

Balazs Pataki  One of the few things I remember clearly is the smell of decomposing bodies (I don't think those photos belong to OE) and an incredible headache...

just goes to show that you don't need fancy gear to document the emotion and danger of a situation. I like it very much. mal
K. Praslowicz  I Agree totally.
Balazs Pataki  Unfortunately I only have a few enlargements, and they deteriorated badly since then, this is one of the luckier ones. Wish I had taken photography more seriously in that time. Thanks guys.

great journalism. i'd wish for more of these types of pics on here, but that's asking for more of these events? :P
Balazs Pataki  Well, of events like this the world can't have enough, and a revolution or anything that comes close to it is sexy and exciting, especially for the young (I was 20 then), but what follows after is sometimes like an anticlimax...

exciting journalist picture, I have a dream to get the moment...still keep on dreaming :-)
Balazs Pataki  Thanks Ricky! I wish the rest of the negatives I still have would be of presentable quality... this could be better too now that I see it, anyway at least they are still there - but what about jpegs in 20 years?
Ricky Siegers  good question Balasz, can not wait to see the sequel of this picture :D
