Rural slaughter pig
I hope that this picture is not offended the sensibilities of anyone with it ..... I just want to try to tell the second I see an event .... I know that to many might seem too raw for this I ask pardon in advance.

enzo penna  thanks

Powerful. What keeps it from perfection, perhaps, is that the guy's head in the background is cut off just a bit too much. Other than that, love the tones, and the ominous hand in the foreground, dripping blood, is menacing, unforgettable even. I had to look twice to see that the hand is holding a knife, but regardless: great, raw, memorable capture.
enzo penna  very well thanks to you

This photo is beautifully heartbreaking. You should not have to apologize for showing people how their food gets to their dinner table. This is just a great photo on so many levels. The clarity of the blood dripping from the knife in the man's hand, with the pig struggling for it's life, while people sit idly in the background, only watching. Bravo on this capture!

Interesting fact: pigs are as intelligent as a three-year old human - something which I feel only adds to the depth of emotion in this shot.

It's difficult for me to look at, but I applaud you for such a great job on this one!
enzo penna  thanks very much...... I greatly appreciate your comment

I do find this image distrubing...however, I know this is real life. If I can ask a question about the photograph? Is that the pig's heart that the butcher is holding? I agree with Codrin...this is human nature and still is part of our lives. However distrubing it may be, it's real.
Jennifer S  Ahh...I see it is a knife. A very bold documentary image.

A great capture of a brutal moment. Like Codrin said, this was part of every human life not so long ago. These days we tend to close our eyes and put this scene in a sterile environment where none has to witness this scene but where it takes place on a huge scale. At least the people on the picture know what it takes to get pork meat on table.
enzo penna  thanks to you for the transition, I want to reiterate that I do not want to be a complaint, but only documentar and tell.......... I do not feel entirely to blame for what I saw .... thanks very much

Strong one, Enzo, really well captured, well, without having any wish to talk a lot about this...I really believe that slowly we're starting to be just too much politicaly corect till a point where we'll be absolutely sterile and we're trying to forgett centuries of history and in fact the whole human nature. I'm not saying that this is the best thing that could be seen or done...but it's or was (till not very long ago...) part of our lifes. Great work Enzo!
all the best
Codrin
enzo penna  Thanks .... Codrin your words flatter me ....... you have understood very well my thoughts and what I say and tell ........ thanks with my whole heart ... hello Codrin

Hi Enzo. This picture is a fantastic example of light oh! so well used. Great great vision here.
The composition really wakes one up, and is well constructed, but without the light it would not have had that
specialness. PS please tell me at what focal lenght this was shot, and did you crop quite a bit? If so - your boldness in
sectioning off the one foot is telling!
enzo penna  thanks...thanks....thanks, Andre...i am glad for your apprezzation.... I will gladly respond to your question, no recovery for telephoto but I used the classic 18/70 nikon but I do not remember the focal states..... I have to look at exif data... I can say I am very close to my subject and that this is the format of the original shot with no crop ..... thank you very much.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks for that Enzo. Well done!

First I thought it's Hungary, where the tradition of pig slaughter is still very much alive in the villages. It's brutal, but poor piggy delivers enough meat for the rest of the year, and virtually every little bit of the animal is used in some way. Many photographers try to make something artistic out of this ritual but I have rarely seen such a strong image - it's alive, a real decisive moment capture. (Especially decisive for the pig.) A great story well told. Buon appetito! :)
enzo penna  Thank you your interpretation is very close to what I wanted to tell with this picture ...... it is the authentic interpretation ..... thanks again.

whoa! woted for it but I was pretty sure that it will never ever be published. now I'm sure that I don't know anything about this site. the photo is different from the others, a lot! the light penetrating throug the sleave of the butcher is what I look at because the pig is, well, kinda falling. very good photo.
enzo penna  thanks a lot......Ivan

Cruel shot Enzo. Wich ritual is this? and from wich country? Every culture has his own i believe. What ever your thoughts are about this one, it's documantary. It blows some minds and that's what it is for. Superb story by the chosen sharpnes and composition. I don't like this picture by the story but as a picture it's very strong. I voted 'for' in screening.........................But it's not in my list of favourites.

Regards,
Abel
enzo penna  You have the right to ask me some questions, but this image is part of a portfolio, if you look at my gallery is another picture of this series where I wrote a caption, sorry maybe I should do the same here ....... ..

For centuries, civilization in rural Italy and from poor areas where the main source of income was from agrigolture, pigs have been reared and slaughtered as provided meat and fat, the meat was stored in the form of sausages , fats used for seasoning foods. This practice, or rather this tradition also held a role as important social value, because it was a time to meet and socialize with family and friends intervened before the processing of pork and then, finally, is organizing a convivial time, during which is cooked and consumed certain parts of animals. Nowadays things have changed, unfortunately, this practice of raising pigs is decreasing more and more over the years.

... so disturbing by itself, but the compo made it even more disturbing, if possible.....unbeliavably cruel and real. It's a punch on the stomach that makes me think a lot. A great documentary shot. Full stop.
Anzi, siamo noi.

Very disturbing. I don't understand the sense to report it photographically without a position related to this. It is something that could be documented but in a right contest and with something else than a simply "event".
enzo penna  Stefano grazie del passaggio....mi dispiace averti creato problemi....scusami
Stefano Corso  Ciao, nessun problema personale.

It's not offensive, it's illegal to slaughter animals this way - that's the problem: Are you as a photographer and witness not obliged to report it to the authorities?
Lars Klottrup  No answer means an artist is above the Law?

Show it like it is. Meat is murder! Most only see the neatly packaged fillet on the supermarket shelf. Few would eat meat if they had to do this themselves. At the Walls sausage factory they run the pigs into a huge metal dish, spray them with water and then electrocute them to death. I despair at being a human being sometimes : (
enzo penna  thanks for the transition ...... unfortunately life is this, nature has always been ..... this is so .... although many do not struggle to believe it .... greetings
