just Kouman
The people in the building call her Kouman, after the little statues - depicting the ghosts of children - one can find placed at the feet of Buddha statues.

Kouman is now 66, but walks around with the spirit and enthusiasm of a five year old girl. She loves to dress up in lavish, outlandish dresses, preferably in screaming colors. In her handbag she carries photos of herself, dressed up for different occasions. In one she wears a short pink dress with a large red heart pinched to it. Her valentine dress. In another one she's dressed up like the tribal mountain people up north. She had it made there. There's one where she poses in her Christmas dress, with Santa hat. In another one Kouman is dressed up for a miss contest. She says she won. She smiles. Then she shows me a red t-shirt she just bought; one with the face of the former prime minister of Thailand, who got ousted and fled the country. The red-shirted people are his supporters. She loves him.
When she goes out, she often wears silly hats and oversized Jacky Kennedy sunglasses. Her hairdo is a reminder of those years as well. And like young girls do, Kouman loves to put on make up. Lots of make up, so that her wrinkles swim in screaming colors and glitterato. I never see her in flip flops, the usual garment for thai people. Kouman always wears little short boots that try to keep up with her fast and relentless pace.
She shows me another photo. This time in a spotless white uniform. Her police uniform. But now she doesn't work anymore, she says. She seems to miss it. Next to her on the photo stands a man, in police uniform as well. Her brother, Kouman says. He pays her rent now, and makes sure she has what she needs.
Kouman laughs a lot, talks a lot. Enjoys life a lot. She has been my neighbor for 5 years. I don't know much about her. I didn't even know her name until today, when my girlfriend told me "they call her Kouman, like the little ghost kids at the feet of Buddha statues". I asked her if that was her real name. My girlfriend said no, but didn't know her real name. just Kouman.

The best thing about this portrait is that you didn't have to write about Kouman. Not a single word. :)

good portrait, like the clarity on the face with the depth created by the light in the corridor.

Natural lighting Richard. Like you can see that bright area in the back, there was one in the front as well, with some natural light coming through, in which I placed her. Then, as it was still pretty low light, I used my reflector screen. Not sure though where it was in this case, but I think on the lower lhs (later I switched to the rhs). It's quite photoshopped though. the original is quite soft and warmer, but I prefered to give it a harsher look

Nice lighting. Was it natural or artificial and it seems to almost come up and on to her from the lower right of her face...

So interesting! Look at her ears! She is Buddha! The clours and the light is just erfect. I think she like the photo too! Well done!

Robert
KoPi  Thanks Robert. believe me though, she would hate it and be insulted. If she ever asks me for the photos, I'll tell her I did everything wrong (which I actually did for most) and had to throw them all away. Would be wrong to make her feel insulted.
Robert  This woman have a big and good heart! Dont worry! Maybe she will give you a big hug!:-)

Never had this as yours & was in two minds to vote before I was dragged kicking & screaming to the shops! Reading the write up & seeing the bit about the shoes I thought of Imelda Markcos. Funny this has a Nan Goldin feel to it its the low light the colour the make up & that sense of an unreal bizarre world...I do like it Koen a nice departure from your "norm".
KoPi  "...before I was dragged kicking & screaming to the shops!"

:-))))

what were you in two minds about Gerry. something technical ? the color treatment ? would love to know.
like you mentioning both IM and NG btw. recently saw Goldin in that bbc documentary series on photography and looks-wise Kouman actually reminds me of Miss Goldin ('s looks). that make up, the old fashioned dress, the hair.

gerard sexton  Actually that's my outward appearance in side I was relived to get out!

Well it was just a taste thing I might have been inclined to give her hair some detail & take out some of the colour to perhaps accentuate the somewhat eccentricity of the woman. And then I am very disturbed about screening become very unnerved by my consistent inability to select images that are getting chosen. I am questioning my right to judgment in this arena & wonder if my vote really counts! Hey I was fed on a diet of her work I found her inspirational though seeing her work left me regretting I never carried a camera in the 60's because so much of what she shot I saw..Oh well I think of her in my small incursions into the twilight world of transvestites & transexuals. Keep on truckin!
KoPi  okay... thanks. I think everybody thinks everything he/she votes against ends up getting published Gerry. I know I do lol. so don't let it get to you. often it's just an impression.
Must really get to know Goldin's work. Only heard about her for the first time with that Elton John contribution of some of Goldin's work to an exhibition, and the row that ensued. And then I saw her in that documentary.

perfecto!!!
KoPi  armadillo !!!
(cheers Fred)
She scares me a bit but this is a fantastic shot! Congratulations!
KoPi  yes, I portrayed her slightly more scary than she really is Marcus, by playing with the colors, but I suppose her nickname 'Kouman' is probably meant a bit disrespectful and mocking by the people, and probably refers to her childish and ghostly looks.
Strong portrait, great light and colour and what a character. Nice one!
KoPi  Thanks Mitchell

Hey Koen loved this in screening, the story to go with this image is just wonderful
KoPi  :-)
thank you Jojo. You're doing rather well on here, aren't you
jojo  LOL not that good you should see the rows of rejections!! I am having to re-work everything! and think about new stuff harder....mmm perhaps that is the point! Love the light behind this lady, is it neon light?
KoPi  "is it neon light?"
nah... it's post processing ;-)
played around with the colors of the photo to achieve a harsher look Jojo.

"mmm perhaps that is the point!"
those annoying points can be so inconvenient sometimes lol
jojo  LOL you are telling me! Superb post processing btw!

Great image, Koen, a clear favorite in screening! Wonderful work, love it!
all the best

KoPi  Glad to hear that Codrin. Got a bit of slagging for technical issues (not entirely undeserved I must admit), but really glad it got through anyway. Thanks

i'd promised myself not to read the story until this was published or not. The image speaks volumes without the story but pleased now to have read the background. love the shot. mal
KoPi  yeah, only added the story and title near the end of the screening period, but didn't think people could read it anyway until publication/rejection. Can everybody read it or just the crew members ? Think before there used to be 'comment for screeners' and 'general comment' but if I'm not there that choice wasn't there anymore ?

thanks for dropping in
