Prateek, the emotions that are set free during Holi you did capture in this amazing scene very expressively and embedded in an almost magical light lit by these splashes of colour.
An excellent, artful document of this important Hindu festival.

Just amazing! Such a wonderful idea to celebrate colour. Northern Europeans just don't do that ;-) great work. Why do the women hit men with long sticks, as you mentioned? Apart from to punish them for being men, obviously ;-) . . .
Prateek Dubey  Hello JBA. The idea is that the whole world is Radha ( Lord Krsna's lover ) and it is colored in the love of the lord. So people like to color themselves and also overcome inhibhitions and make new friends and relationships. Now Krsna was a naughty avataar. Once he stole some women's clothes while they were bathing in the river. They later caught up with him and gave him a sound thrashing with sticks. So this is enacted in the ritual. It only happens in holi here at Barsana and nowhere else in India. Krsna is as controversial and fallible as the nature of man. A very interesting personality...
JBA  Thanks for that explanation Prateek.

Greetings from The Netherlands,

Wonderful bringing India to my study! brings Vikram Seths words to life!
Prateek Dubey  Thank you Gerard. I haven't read much of Vikram. I went half way through the 'Golden Gate', which I was certainly enjoying, but got distracted and left it at that. This part of India was a revelation to me. Felt very un-Indian in their midst..

The Holi Festival! It is on 11 of march right! Im happy to see it this year life!

Robert
Prateek Dubey  Yes Robert for the rest of India Holi is on the 11th. But it was on the 5th and 6th for the people of Barsana and Nandgaon in U.P. Be carefull. Play and attend holi only with people you know well and don't take too much Bhang...And enjoy yourself.
Robert  The Bhang i never take:-) Yes i will be carefull. Already we got advice from customer and our safety department!

Every bit as strong as I hoped it would be...stunning...looking forward to more !!!
Prateek Dubey  Later in the day, women thrash men with long sticks. Unfortunately the quality of those pictures are not that great, so I'll send those pictures to you seperately..
Prateek Dubey  Oh and by the way, drinking hash in milk is a part of the Holi culture. I didn't have the guts to try it though..
Prateek Dubey  Hello Stephen, this was beyond my expectations. In the city Holi is low key and without the appropriate spirit, mostly ends up being an excuse for bad behaviour and hooliganism. At Barsana, it was like a rock concert and seeped in devotion. Imagine such a scene with drum beats, cymbols and chants...But a difficult environment for your camera..

Holi is an important Hindu festival. Its unique as in that people throw color on each other. Usually color is in a powder form. There is also color made with soaking a flower ( Tesu) in water and then dowsing each other with that colored water. The philosophy is that one celebrates being colored in the colors of the Lord.
