HDR? very nicely done.

John Parminter Hi Daniel, no it's not an HDR image. It's a single RAW file and I used a 0.9 and 0.6 ND graduated filter across the sky and snow line to balance the exposure. I did however tone map the single RAW file by making 3 separate TIFFs at 0.5EV apart then blending in Photomatix as if they were three separately exposed files. This technique is not used to increase the dynamic range as that is satisfactorily set in the original RAW file but it does increase richness of tones and enhance the 3D effect a wee bit.

Paul Jackson Hi John, may I ask why you create TIFFs and blend them rather than tonemapping straight from the RAW - does it create a different effect?

Whatever your process it evidently produces fabulous results - the quality of the shine on those stones, and that suffused soft light, amazing! And the unique aspect of the composition was definitely worth the cold feet =)

John Parminter Thanks Paul, I have had very poor results tone mapping from one RAW file and don't do it, I just simply experimented with 3 TIFFs at different exposures then put them in Photomatix to see if the tones and textures could be enhanced, the side effect if you like is the 3D kind of feel to the skies. My full tutorial is in the post processing forum section. I don't use it all the time and recently have just been tweaking a few levels of the files straight out of camera.

John Parminter Indeed Jesper, although it doesn't look like this all the time..! However, I fully recommend a trip to the west coast, Glen Coe, Skye, Torridon and Sutherland being particularly beautiful for mountain scenery.

That's a beautiful photo. May I ask how you came to use 2 different grads at the same time? And what is tone mapping? Sorry if these are silly questions, I'm a newbie with the digital lark. Once again, I love the photo.

Thank you all, Skye is a very special place if you are mad on mountains as myself, this shot was a culmination of three days watching, waiting and experiencing some of the most memorable weather conditions I've experienced in the hills.
