It's beautiful. Depressing and yet elevating at the same time, as if emblematic of a great struggle. For me, the 'elevating' wins out and thus it is an optimistic image in spite of its deceptively dark visage.
I actually see it as an anti-religious (specifically anti-Christian) icon, but I can't tell you why (actually, I can, but you'd think me batty).

Louis Steiner I've been thinking further about your thoughts on its message. For what it's worth, I rather thought it was pro-aboriginal, or, for me, it carried a message about the connectedness of native Canadians with the land, which is a highly spiritual experience. I welcome your interpretation though, and find it very interesting. Thanks again.

paulo bono OK, my thinking was simple (my critics might say necessarily so). The figure has his arms slightly raised, and his head inclined down and to one side ... both are subtly suggestive of the proverbial crucified Christ. But only suggestive, you see, and not to my thinking in a sympathetic way. Instead it seemed a deliberate parody, as if in gentle mockery. And his back is turned, which is of course emblematic of rejection.

But I'd said it was 'optimistic', and indeed it seems so to me. He walks toward the light. He seems self-contained, and not at all bereft. There's a hint of the womb in the way he is cradled by the bower of trees, which leads to thoughts of rebirth. All optimistic, even triumphant stuff.

Some of these things I saw immediately, and some only as I worked my way backwards from my conclusions.

I had to see it this way I suppose; it fits my own story and in any case I know nothing much about native Canadians.
