Fantastic composition that really balance the photo. It is important to find the right path, but we always have guidelines and signs to lead us the right path, if we can see the signs.. Choose the outer path and you will end up in a endless sea, but you might have the adventure of your life if you dare to go outside the directions! :O)

A wonderful one Mal! Honestly, I've not been so impressed at a first sight, but staring at it I started to find so many pleasant elements; the water, the sky, the lines and the barrel? in the middle which is what makes the picture in my opinion! And don't ask me why but I think this would be perfect with a child running on the pier; that's what I immediately thought!

I never get tired of the long exposure water. Beautiful and dynamic composition with the lighthouse and the curved pier (or w/e it is:). Very good and pleasing to the eye.

Wonderful image Mal! I really like the usage of the square format, it works very well with the composition of the different elemnts in the image. Love the "rays" in the sky, accentuating the composition and leading the eye to the lighthouse. I like the single curved line of the pier contrasting to all the straight ones
Did you have a choice in the vertical position of the camera? Is the choice of placing the lines overlapping the horizon intentional?

Mal Smart great question Thomas. I have to confess that I've been trying to get a nice photo from this location for about 3 years! lol. So I have a few previous efforts that I did not like to visualise this one, yes I knew this was going to be a square crop at the shooting stage. I also needed a south westerly wind with the tide at the right height to give the wave breakers in the foreground. I have lost count of all the bad photo's I have of this location Thomas! lol. mal

But what about the question..? Is the lining of the pier and horizon intentional? It's kind of cool but could also be perceived as distracting...

Mal Smart hehe, forgot that bit. I have a lot of images that I will not post here because the horizon and foreground objects clash badly e.g.

this one I decided to go with because the light house is so tall that it breaks up the monotony of object and horizon blending as one or clashing, depending on how you look at it. I have some shots with the camera on the floor but the horizon still clashes and unfortunately there is nothing large to stand on to break the cycle. Great question and one that I have been trying to resolve for years. mal

I don't know how you create your ocean glow, but it makes for beautiful pictures!
