Straight from the scan - just burned the corners a bit for a frame and a 16:9 crop. Tried to keep it as pure as possible to reflect the moment. Thank you.

I like all your phtographs Richard and among them this is so strong thematically as well as technically. but still I wonder if such honest men really exist! :-)
Richard Ford  I am sure they do... I wish I was one. But I am too bitter and jaded.
Wonderful moment.

yeah, great romantic movie! wonder if they are saying hello or goodbye.
Richard Ford  Good question - or if they were told they can't be together - that happens a lot here as well - if a controlling parent disapproves...

ris  yes,I know. my wife is Vietnameese and I'm lucky her mother liked me. Rest is history...

Alone in the world. I'm out of words when I look at such image.
Richard Ford  It is funny how when I shot it all I noticed were the hands. The power hit me much later and even then after a few reviews of it....
MMarie   The hands for sure are extremely beautiful no doubt about it. And they make the picture strong, and so emotional.

I watched your last published photo and went again through your beautiful portfolio. How did I miss this one I do not know. This is in my opinion your best one, and one of the best street photos in the site. I admire your style and always read all your comments and remarks. Ciao, Paolo
Richard Ford  Thanks Paolo... yes it is a very addictive image. ;-)
Awesome! Very strong on many levels!
Richard Ford  Thanks Mitchell!. I love it for the surreal movie like qualities that it has.....I love BW film! ;-)

Richard Ford  Thanks Jure - but I still think your shot is better.... it has the snow and that fence and all that atmosphere of spur of the moment to it.

great shot, fav in screen. I like scene and perfect bw. bravo.
Richard Ford  We can all thank Kodak for continuing to invest money and research into making such great films like this new TMAX 400 that was only released to the public in December of 2007!

It would be a sad day if all we had was digital and no choice.... :-(
Giorgio Lorcet  I agree with you. TMAX was the film that I preferred when I used my old analogical Nikon (I have also used TMAX 3200 :))

You are a strong street photographer... well captured:-))
Richard Ford  Well, I can't take too much credit. All I do is make sure that I dedicate time and get outside. Whatever happens to be there is beyond my control or planning. I just keep hitting the pavement as much as I can and always have one of my cameras with me.

Cheers,
RF.

I feel the same way as Mal. I think this is one of those images that gets better with each observations. The man's hang is such a strong feature. I also like how you can't tell where the man's hair ends and where the woman's hair starts. Great image, well done.
Richard Ford  True, true. It is very addictive. It was interesting to shoot at the time, but I don't remember being particularly excited about it. And then I left the exposed film in the fridge for a few weeks before I got around to souping it. But as I mentioned to Mal - it does somehow slowly sink in and amplify it's impact. Maybe because we are all photographers we are predisposed to approaching images differently?

Movie like!!!
Richard Ford  16:9 crop will help in that dept too! ;-) As well as a centred composition and not rule of thirds.

well done Richard. I must admit that I was unsure about this one at first look but when I returned to it a second and third time the energy of the emotion in the shot became more and more prevalent. I like it a lot. mal
Richard Ford  G'Day Mal,

We had the same experiences then. When I first looked at the proof print it was "a maybe" for later work. But a definite scan candidate. And when I did my first run though of the images once imported in Aperture it grew a little - but still "meh".

Then as I looked more all of a sudden it just took my breath away. When I look at this shot I feel breathless and a weird sense of apprehension.

It has quickly become my favourite shot. Not because I like how it looks photographically (which was how I had my previous photo's) but simply because it resonates inside me and causes a physiological reaction.

Cheers,
RF.

I like the emotion, this is the reason I fav the photo
Richard Ford  Yes Jitarius, the emotion is strong. I seldom get that in my photo's. I am really amazed at how it came out.
Remo Rufer 3 years ago
wow, great tones! really like the photo a lot! may i ask what kind of developer you used?
Richard Ford  G'Day Remo,

Thank you. The good old D-76 diluted 1:!. I find that always gave great tones and contrast with Tri-X and the same holds true for TMAX as well - which IMHO scans a lot better than TRI-X does.

If you push these films (TMAX 400 and TRI-X) one stop, or even just 15% more time you get progressively darker and nicer contrasts - albeit with more grain. But this new TMAX 400 really has fine grain.

RF.

Remo Rufer  thanks richard! i tried the new tmax 400 and developed in tetenal ultrafin, it looks ok but not as good as yours! i really love the classical look of the negativ when pushed one stop!
Richard Ford  Ah - I should be more clear. At 1 stop push you don't need to change the development time. I shot it at EI 400 but then developed it as if I had shot it at EI1600.
